Royal among All-Star starters, maybe even two?

Friday, June 28, 2024

g their cage floors and a few readers have seen Gazette scribbler R.B. Headley’s account of athletic highlights.

Such as forgetting his glasses before little league practice, then proceeding to chase high-flying birds across the outfield.

“Man, that ball just keeps on going over that busy highway,” Rumblin’ Bumblin’ recalled. “I’ve seen a ball (bird) soar that far.”

“Keep chasing it,” the coach reportedly said. “We’ll finish practice while you wander back.”

Anyhoo, R.B. did once hit .678 (19 for 28) during an entire Kearney Church League “lob-pitch” softball season so his glory days finally did arrive.

Consider one of those rare outs occurred when R.B. tripped and did a full-belly flop while leaving the batter’s box.

“I should have been 20 for 28,” he lamented.

R.B’s love for diamond action continues on considering he’s looking to mix in naps any hour during any game. He’s viewed enough MLB this season to once again realize his beloved Cincinnati Reds really stink along with who should be the starters for another fairly dull MLB All-Star Game.

Hey, it’s always fun to say who is good and who isn’t so here goes.

Just the American League today, though R.B. loves the National.

Catcher: Adley Rutschman (Orioles), Salvador Perez (Royals)

These two well outpaced the field in Phase 1. Rutschman is looking for a better Phase 2 result than last year, when he came up short against the Rangers’ Jonah Heim. The 26-year-old has been nothing but stellar -- and the Orioles have done nothing but win -- since he arrived in the Majors in May 2022. The switch-hitter owns a .297/.350/.470 line with 14 home runs, just six shy of his career high from last year, and he continues to be a tremendous pitch blocker behind the plate. Meanwhile, Perez has a chance to become only the ninth catcher to start seven or more All-Star Games and the third to do so in the past 35 years, after Ivan Rodriguez and Mike Piazza. Even at age 34, Perez remains a threat with the bat, with 12 homers and 47 RBIs.

R.B.: I’ve always loved Salvador Perez (not a man crush) because of his great talent, skill and toting a head that resembles one strong stallion horse. I’ll take PEREZ over any catcher this season though Rutschman is real good.

This is extremely too wordy, here are more conside All-Star picks.

Just the American League today.

First base: Ryan Mountcastle (Orioles), Vladimir Guerrero Jr. (Blue Jays).

R.B.: Give me Mountcastle over the video-game cover boy Guerrero. Oriole having much better season.

Second base: Jose Altuve (Astros), Marcus Semien (Rangers)

Semien’s numbers down along with World Champion hung-over Rangers. Altuve is just good every year, cheater or not.

Third base: José Ramírez (Guardians), Jordan Westburg (Orioles).

R.B.: RAMIREZ is underrated and doesn’t anyone realize the GUARDIANS are better than Yankees, Dodgers or Orioles?

Shortstop: Gunnar Henderson (Orioles), Bobby Witt Jr. (Royals)

R.B.: I love Witt and that Royals club, but HENDERSON is behind only Aaron Judge for AL home runs with 26. Give me GUNNAR.

Outfield: Juan Soto (Yankees), Steven Kwan (Guardians), Anthony Santander (Orioles), Kyle Tucker (Astros).

R.B.: Wow, SOTO’s a lock and I love how KWAN is hitting like .390 despite missing time with injuries. Tough call but I will take SANTANDER.

Designated hitter: Yordan Alvarez (Astros), Ryan O’Hearn (Orioles). R.B.: YORDAN baby!
