LINCOLN, Neb. — Watch out, coach Deion “Neon” Sanders of Colorado because a certain McCook Bison alum and future math teacher could be taking aim at you with his own glitzy glam this fall.

“I definitely feel like part of the Husker team,” HuskerVision camera operator intern Lucas Gomez-Wilson said on Monday. “I’m carrying about a $250,000 camera and all the equipment is top of the line. I’d love to see Deion and say (NFL cornerback legend) Champ Bailey was better.”

Lucas plans to be there again with Nebraska’s HuskerVision when Sanders brings his Buffaloes into Memorial Stadium this September.

The Champ Bailey reference shows Lucas’ Denver Broncos fan along with perhaps a goal to join their video time sometime after his college days.

Most importantly, the 2023 McCook High grad’s work ethic. shines through just like his own “champ” days for the Bison.

Lucas was an all-state football receiver, state track medalist, varsity player on two Bison district finalist basketball teams along with playing Legion baseball.

Yet McCook High video guru/instructor Ben Vetrovsky believes a different kind of quickness has propelled Lucas into his HuskerVision duties.

“Lucas is a very quick learner,” Vetrovsky said. “I taught him some of the basics, but he learned a lot on his own. He set the standard in our classroom as both a junior and senior. And at UNL, he was one of three who gave what the scored as a “perfect” interview.”

“Not to mention he was a elite four-sport athlete for McCook,” Vetrovsky added.

Lucas covered more sports than four during his freshman year at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

The son of Randy Wilson and Jayleen Evans shot, then often edited his own video for five Nebraska Cornhusker athletic teams: football, both basketball teams, softball plus baseball.

“I’ve love to get into Husker volleyball this year,” he said about the 2023 national runner-ups.

Lucas got a super close-up look at Husker greats like shooting guard Keisei Tominaga.

This 6’2” Japanese star helped lead Big Red to upset wins over national finalist/No. 1 Purdue, overtime past No. 6 Wisconsin and into Nebraska’s first NCAA men’s tournament game since 2014.

“Crazy, unbelievable energy,” Lucas said about Tominaga. “You can’t really appreciate what he did without seeing him close-up in person.”

Lucas videoed other greats like softball leader Billie Andrews, who broke Nebraska’s all-time home runs record when she hit No. 55 on March 21.

“I shot that and blended into other highlights for a video that fired up Husker softball fans between innings,” Lucas explained. “It’s fun to see people’s reaction. Especially little kids who jump up and down.”

Lucas videoed most Husker home football games despite another “down” 5-7 season where they missed a bowl game.

Being a Bison wide receiver, Lucas loved getting video of Husker pass catchers like speedy Jaylen Lloyd and his average of more than 39 yards per catch.

“I liked Jaylin cause he sort of played receiver like me. Get behind people and make the big play,” Lucas explained.

L G-W recalled another memorable football experience this spring.

“I was filming the Tunnel Walk and nearly tripped,” he said. “But seriously, I just enjoyed all the games. That’s saying something for a guy who wasn’t much into college (sports) at all until this year. I was a pro guy. But I’m all into college now.”

Lucas is currently conquering Calculus and other classes while starting another pursuit of his teaching degree.

While math teaching is his main goal. he’s certainly planning on keeping HuskerVision a big part of his collegiate training.

He admittedly “was kind of confused at first, you learn about how to do the job as you go.”

“I give (McCook teacher-coach) Bill Ramsay credit for getting me started, and especially coach Ben Vetrovsky,” Lucas added. “Ben really taught me the ropes.”

Lucas broadcasted some Bison athletes during his prep career, but nothing compared to now covering post-game Husker press conferences with coaches like men’s leader Fred Hoiberg.

“I love listening to coaches like that. There’s so much knowledge,” he said. “And I like player interviews as well. Jeremiah Alleck (men’s basketball) was my favorite interview. He always has plenty to say.”

Lucas will likely be talking a lot with old Bison friends.

Brother Jacob Gomez-Wilson, Coleton Lentz and other recent McCook High teammates are planning to room together starting 2024-25.

They were all Bison athletes with Jacob starring on those same three Bison teams as Lucas.

Meanwhile, McCook’s HuskerVision man will continue cheering on his beloved Denver Broncos. Lucas has attended several Broncos games including even a road trip to the “Black Hole” for Broncos vs. those historic rival Oakland Raiders.

Besides Champ Bailey, his main Bronco favorites include current D-back Justin Simmons and Super Bowl-winning wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders.

Lucas can even find some joy if the Broncos’ really most despised rival continues to win.

“I cannot, cannot, cannot stand the Kansas City Chiefs,” he said. “But my girlfriend is a Chiefs fan, so I guess at least she’s able to be happy.”

Yet again, Lucas now has laser focus beyond pro sports and much more on Nebraska’s own football leader: coach Matt Ruhle.

“I certainly hope they do better,” Lucas concluded. “And I think they will.”
