MCC women rule Omaha all-JUCO diamond team

MCCOOK, Neb. — The McCook Community College softball team recently placed six players on the Omaha World-Herald’s all JUCO Midlands team.

The Lady Indians, who finished with a 34-21 record, led all junior college teams with six players selected on the 15-player team. Central Community College and Southeast Community College both placed three players on the team with Western Nebraska having two players and Northeast Community College one.

In addition, a seventh MCC player received honorable mention. Three Lady Indian selections were sophomores and four were freshmen.

McCook players selected include pitchers Ella Covill-Marter and Sadie Kahl, catcher Laila Gutierrez, infielders Lexi Knapp and Andie Suhai and outfielder Anna Elliott.

Covill-Marter (sophomore, Queensland, Australia) went 15-8 with 17 complete games and a 3.55 ERA. She struck out 225 hitters in 153.2 innings. She finished eighth in the nation with those strikeouts. Offensively she batted .418. She will continue her softball career at Ferris State University, a D2 school in Big Rapids, Mich.

Kahl, (freshman, Calgary, Alberta) went 14-7 with 12 complete games and a 4.43 ERA. She struck out 109 hitters in 120 innings and also batted .466 with 35 RBIs.

Gutierrez (freshman, Seminole, Texas,) batted .384 with six home runs and 53 RBIs in 190 at bats. She led the team with 47 stolen bases, which was 13th most in the nation.

Knapp (freshman Berthoud, Colo.) led MCC hitting .472 with 11 homers and 69 RBIs and a .525 on-base average. She pitched in 15 games and went 5-4 with five complete games and struck out 53 hitters in 52.1 innings.

Andie Suhai (sophomore, Medicine Hat, Alberta) batted .433 with 15 home runs and 69 RBIs. She led the team in round-trippers and tied Knapp for a team-high 69 RBIs while topping the team slugging at .807. She committed to D1 Southern University in Baton Rouge, La.

Elliott (freshman, Calgary Alberta) batted .370 with nine home runs, 49 RBISs and 15 steals in 51 games.

In being selected honorable mention, Dean (sophomore, Gering), hit .367 with five home runs and 44 RBIs in 47 games.
