Margaret “Peg” Ann Long Calhoon

June 28, 1934 - Dec. 31, 2023

McCOOK, Neb. - Margaret “Peg” Ann Long Calhoon, age 89, was born on June 28, 1934, in Fairfield, Iowa to her parents, Lawrence Arthur and Katie Leona (Manning) Long. She died peacefully on Dec. 31, 2023, at Community Hospital, McCook, Neb.

During her childhood, the family moved from Iowa to Detroit, Mich., where she started school, then to New York City (Queens) where she finished grade school and high school. Returning to Fairfield, she attended Parsons College, her parents’ Alma Mater, where she majored in music with an emphasis on organ and piano. It was at Parsons that she met and married Richard Calhoon in 1956. Pursuing his Marine Corps career, the couple lived in Virginia, Florida, and California, and had three children during that time. After his discharge, they moved to Minneapolis where he became an insurance agent. He was later transferred to Beatrice, Neb.

After their divorce in 1978, Peg returned to Minneapolis, Minn. to care for her mother. After her mother’s death, she continued to live in Minneapolis for 25 more years, working first at a music store and then a coffee company. After her retirement, she moved to McCook, Neb. at the urging of her children, to be near her daughter, Sue.

Peg dearly loved her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and loved spending time with them. Her love of music was always with her as she played the organ in churches wherever she was living. She taught piano in her home and loved choral music, singing in various choruses. Peg was a member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood for 50 years and was a member of Chapter FA, McCook.

As a lifelong member of the Methodist Church, she had a strong faith in God, and always looked to Him for guidance and strength.

Peg was preceded in death by her parents, and grandson Wes ley Ross Calhoon. She is survived by daughter Linda (Rick) McGuire from Monroe City, Mo., daughter Susan (Russell) Ankersen from McCook, Neb., and son Michael (Renea) from Estancia, N.M., nine grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and brother David (Jean) Long from Palm Springs, Calif.

Per Peg’s request, a Celebration of Homecoming will occur Friday, June 28, 2024 , which would have been her 90th birthday. Service will be at 2:00 p.m. at Peace Lutheran Church, 411 East 6th Street, in McCook. A short reception will follow the service and burial will follow the reception at Calvary Cemetery in McCook.

In lieu of flowers, please send memorials to the Minnetonka Choral Society, PO Box 564, Wayzata, MN 55391. As an active participant of the Choral Society for many years while she lived in Minneapolis, it fulfilled her love of singing classical and holiday music in this prestigious choir.
