Nebraska man participates in MS run the USA
McCOOK Neb. - One day, about eight years ago, Randal Devlin decided to go for a run. As a railroad engineer, Devlin had previously lived a sedentary lifestyle and found himself in the hospital with ulcers. At that point, he decided that he never wanted his wife and children to see him in that position again.
He began to take better care of himself, exercised, and switched to a gluten-free, high-protein diet. Then, one day, he decided to run. He ran 1 mile and then kept going, not stopping until he reached 6 miles. In the years since, he has completed several marathons, half marathons, 10 and 5 Ks, and even a 50K. Now, at 55 years old, he will complete his longest run to date.
This summer, Devlin will embark on a monumental journey. Over a six-day period, he will run an astounding 165 miles in support of multiple sclerosis awareness. His journey will begin on June 3 in Wray, Colo., and conclude on June 8 in Holdrege, Neb. What drives him to undertake this grueling ultra-relay event? It's his love for his wife, Debi, who battles with MS on a daily basis. His participation is a testament to his unwavering support and his determination to make a difference.
Devlin is one of 21 runners serving as ambassadors. To participate, each runner commits to fundraising $10,000 over ten months, running approximately 160 miles over six consecutive days during their assigned relay segment. Once selected, each runner spends months training and fundraising with in-depth help from the organization before the event starts as they prepare to devote one week on the road while completing their segment's miles. They are aided on the road by the organization's road crew team. This year's road crew will include documentarians documenting this year's MS Run the US relay, which is in its twelfth year.
This year's relay began on April 3 in Santa Monica, CA, and will culminate four months later in New York City.
Devlin will run through McCook, Neb., today on his way to Holdrege. For more information about MS Run the US and how to support their cause, please visit www.msruntheus.org
