Early July target for aqua park opening
McCOOOK, Neb. — The new McCook Aquatic Park target date is early July, City Manager Nate Schneider said at Monday’s City Council meeting.
Schneider said the progress at the McCook City pool is moving quickly, and it’s exciting to see everything come together. Some fencing has been installed, painting is upcoming, and the finalization of electrical and plumbing work is also in progress.
Funds have been used to purchase pool vacuum systems and lockers. Discussions have occurred about the sound system, and options are being explored. Orders have already been placed for the lounge chairs and tubes. The next meeting to continue coordinating the project is scheduled for June 10 at 3:30 p.m.
Councilman Jerry Calvin questioned whether the pool would remain open for an extended season due to the late season opening. “I would be a little disappointed in a six-week pool season,” Calvin said.
Schneider explained that due to the majority of lifeguards being students, it is unlikely that it would happen. At full capacity, the pool will require a minimum of nine lifeguards on duty. There is an additional lifeguard training class starting soon, and the city is still working to recruit more.
Schneider also gave an update on the ballfield project, saying that a first draft of the purchase agreement has been made, and the hope is to close on the land by August.
Discussions regarding the 2024 City of McCook Wage Study began; while many employee wages are in line, others, such as in the police department, must be raised to be competitive in similarly sized communities.
Fire Chief Marc Harpham said that the McCook City Fire Department was one of 20 communities selected to have their ambulances equipped with telemedicine technology.
The next McCook City Council meeting will be 5:30 p.m. June 17. The public is encouraged to attend.
