May-Hay boys bring super 'bread and butter' spread to title game
McCOOK, Neb. — Come on, could “bread and butter” really top all the concession treats or free cuisine at Saturday’s RPAC tournament championship game?
Without a doubt when considering that’s a reference to Maywood-Hayes Center's Jeremiah Ingison and Haydn Farr with their 35 combined points.
“Him and me are like bread and butter, man,” Farr remarked as the duo actually outscored Alma, 35-34, in a 40-34 Wolves repeat title Saturday. “It’s just a blast playing with him (Ingison). He’s so cool, calm and collected — but when you need a big play, he’s the man.”
Farr couldn’t have been closer to the truth considering Ingison hit five shots which put May-Hay (15-2) ahead during this see-saw showdown of No. 1 seeds.
The Wolves took a 26-19 lead only to see Alma’s 14-3 flurry make it 30-29 through three quarters.
Sophomore Xavier Mitchell’s trio of three-point bombs led an Alma team featuring four sophs and a freshmen among their top six players.
“Alma is a real good young team,” Farr confirmed. “They’re gonna go places.”
Yet it was the Wolves going to another title behind 6’5” Ingison and 6’3” Farr.
Senior Gage Gerlach also hit his only shot just when May-Hay needed it.
Leading 35-34, Farr saved his best heroics for the game’s final moments.
Ingison drove for what looked like another lay-up ...but the ball bounced too far off that Graff Events Center glass.
Farr reached high to secure the rebound, then made an off-balance putback while being fouled.
His “and one” free throw made it 38-34.
The Cardinals never scored again.
“We’re repeat champs and that’s a really big deal in this conference. It’s a tough conference,” Farr concluded. “We just had to keep our composure tonight and hit some free throws.”
