McCOOK Neb. - Many community members braved the cold Thursday morning, Dec. 14, 2023, to witness the groundbreaking ceremony for the new construction of homes along Cheyenne Road.

It will consist of two duplexes, four units, featuring a two-bedroom layout with two baths and a two-stall garage, and one duplex that will be two three-bedroom, two-bath, and a two-stall garage. The site also allows for three more duplexes to be built in the future, further expanding the available housing inventory.

The MEDC has been diligently working over the past year to secure funding for the single-level homes. Engle expressed gratitude for the generosity of donors and sponsors, which made the housing project possible. With the support of the Nebraska Department of Economic Development, the MEDC has been able to utilize its workforce housing funds effectively.

Amanda Engell, the Director of Housing Development at MEDC, shared that the MEDC has been working hard over the past year to bring some single-level homes for all ages utilizing their workforce housing funds. They had been awarded some generous funds through the Nebraska Department of Economic Development over the past few years that they have used for other projects now this one.

The local community eagerly anticipates the completion of these homes, recognizing the role they will play in attracting new residents and bolstering the local economy.

Mayor Linda Taylor emphasized the significance of the housing project, calling it “the greatest thing to happen to McCook.” She explained, “What we’re seeing now is an explosion in this community because housing is the number one thing we need to get people recruited here. If you don’t have houses for people to live in, they can’t come to work.” Mayor Taylor further expressed the desire of families to move back to McCook, citing the town’s warm, welcoming atmosphere and strong community values.

Charlie McPherson, the Executive Director of MEDC, highlighted the unique benefits of the new housing development. He stated, “We haven’t had this type of multifamily single-floor living setup for a very long time, and it’s going to allow a lot of new opportunities for people looking to downsize out of a bigger house. It’s a good price point, a little bit lower than some of the other houses currently on the market.” McPherson added that the development will also include a homeowners association (HOA) for lawn and snow removal services.

Angela Allen, the Assistant Executive Director of MEDC, emphasized the positive impact this project will have on the community. She remarked, “It means growth for the community. It means additional housing for the community. It’s much needed and it’s progress.”

The community has rallied behind the housing efforts, with local businesses demonstrating their support, recognizing that a thriving business environment relies on providing suitable housing options for employees.

Thomas Kayton, representing Arrowhead Construction Development, expressed his appreciation for being part of the project. He commended the local leaders who invested in making these housing opportunities a reality, acknowledging that such projects would not happen without their commitment and the support of the Nebraska workforce housing funds.

After the groundbreaking ceremony, Engell thanked the support of the MEDC board of directors, both past and present. She stated, “The community would not be as great as it is without you guys.” Engell expressed gratitude for their continued assistance and collaboration, acknowledging the vital role they play in the success of the MEDC.

As McCook looks forward to the completion of the project, the community eagerly anticipates the positive impact it will have in providing much-needed housing and encouraging economic growth.
