Friday Night Lights are back! MFL about to kick off

McCOOK, Neb. — Who knew players from Hawkeye, Cyclone, Gator and maybe even Gator country have gained football experience at Weiland Field?
“We’ve had kiddos as far away as Florida play in the MFL,” McCook Football League director Joe Vetrovsky confirmed this morning. “They’re here visiting friends or relatives and are welcome to be part of it. We have a player from Iowa in the league this year.”
Other area pigskin powerhouse towns like Benkelman often join McCook’s athletes for this annual three-week adventure to finish July.
Vetro has been thrilled to see 140 youths competing this season which has filled eight MFL teams — four in fifth-sixth grade and four seventh-eighth grade.
They’ll all take on their season openers at Weiland Field Friday night under those McCook Bison bright lights.
“The great thing about this year is the weather we’ve had for practices,” Vetrovsky said about temps that have often cooled during evening workouts.
Certainly not a common occurrence around southwest Nebraska in mid-late July.
“At the same time, we see temperatures are likely going to be in the 90s next week,” the McCook High head coach added. “So we’re also ready to deal with that.”
Fans can watch some Monday Night football at Weiland Field next week leading into season finales just one week away on Thursday, July 27.
“Before you know it, we’re putting the equipment away. It goes fast,” Vetrovsky said. “But the important thing is the kids all seem to be having fun. They’re ready to play some games now.”
New players fill the team rosters every season, but it was Chiefs and Rams who went unbeaten through the MFL trenches last summer.
