Nothing more fun than time with people

Who has more fun than people? Adult fun, no giggling, just good adult conversation. I’d like to offer last Saturday on the Streets of McCook for the 7th annual “Cruisin’ the Bricks Car Show and Cruise Night!” Well organized. Lots of prizes, some for the neat cars and some for just showing up. Things for kids to do. Food truck plus local take out and restaurants. Even the weatherman cooperated. A bit hot but then this is summer in Nebraska and there was adequate shade to seek.
The Wagner group was the sponsor and they had it well put together. For most entries to date, my unofficial count is some 132 in number. Ranging from unsold/brand new, I’m not sure they counted those, down to my 1925 Model T in age. Some original, most restored at least a bit and most cleaned and shined up to show the owner’s pride. Yes as a people we do love cars.
After the prizes were awarded I didn’t see anyone with tears in their eyes from not having won. It all seems to be in good fun not life or death. Better luck next time.
The next event was the cruising portion and in a model T with poor brakes, the nature of the beast, cruising is not a lot of fun. So I drove home, picked up Grannie, stopped at Scoops for a bite of ice cream and together watched everyone drive around to enjoy the evening and show off their ride. I was happy to note quite a few people up and down the cruise route there just to watch and enjoy the evening.
The next big get-together in the area is the 150-year celebration for our neighbor the Village of Culbertson. Lots of events are scheduled and it will even be better if you too can participate. Even a Car Show starting at 2 p.m. on Saturday the 1st. Of course, their annual 4th of July Parade is the most fun one in the area. Lots of exciting events are scheduled from the 1st through the 4th so come on out and help us all celebrate.
Interested in a bit of history? At 2 p.m. at the Fairgrounds Ag building, there will be a historical video presentation featuring many of your friends, relatives and neighbors reminiscing about early Culbertson life. Professionally done thanks to a grant from Kugler’s and GoLight. Might even see your favorite columnist talking instead of writing. I hope that I don’t embarrass myself!
Earlier I poked fun at our little Wagner group here in McCook and was referring to Howard and Janet Kool’s in-laws that have taken over a large share of the car business in this town. Doing well in my opinion.
There is another Wagner Group that is in the news and we need to pay attention. That is the group demonstrating, taking action, against Vladimir Putin in Russia. That is a hard thing to put my arms around as it is so different from how our own military works. Yes the US has employed mercenaries in the past, think the Hessians at our American Revolution and even more recently as in the working of our current CIA. Like I say it is important to pay attention.
It is times like these I wish that we had chosen a different President!
That is how I saw it.
