McCook tennis girls aim to 'up game' rest of way
SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb. — Scottsbluff surprised McCook, 33-30, for a rare victory over the Bison girls tennis team at Saturday’s Scottsbluff Invitational.
“Scottsbluff played their home courts really well,” coach Matt Wiemers observed.
Senior Carsyn Craig never cares where she dominates as four impressive 8-0 sweeps raised her record to 29-1 at No. 2 singles.
The Bison No. 3 doubles team also won a championship with senior Laci Stewart and sophomore Brooklyn Gillen now 23-0 against varsity foes.
No. 2 doubles Rowen Wiemers and Roslyn Wiemers took one home more Bison title at No. 2 doubles where they went 4-1, losing only to Gering.
Sophomore Izzy Clause placed second at No. 1 singles with her 3-1 record. Seniors Abbie Johnson and Jaci Meyers will surely rebound from a 1-3 performance at No. 1 doubles. They’re still 25-7 this season.
Coach Wiemers provides far more insightful anaylsis about this latest Bison tourney performance:
“Yes, aside from our 1 doubles having an off day, the rest of the team put in some good results. Carsyn going 8-0 in all four matches was impressive, although she didn’t have the competition the other divisions were presented with. But still, to not drop a game was quite a feat!
Izzy got off to a slow start. She played Hastings first round and got down 0-4, only to fight back to a 3-4 score. She came up short in the end but Hastings has a talented singles player. I liked seeing Izzy respond, going 8-0 the rest of the day. Showed good focus and poise.
No. 2 doubles had a good day, going 3-1. They have been tested by Gerings 2 doubles team all season long. It was great to see them respond well in their final two matches and pick up two wins.
Abbie and Jaci had a tough day. It was unfortunate to have a tough day on a big meet, but they are seniors, with a lot of experience and will bounce back. I need to coach them differently so I too take the blame.
We definitely have some things to improve upon, and the next three days will help us address those areas before we take the courts for our final matches of the regular season.
It sounds crazy to say we were disappointed to place 2nd as a team, but that’s the level we hold our standards to.”
