Opinion
No politics here
Tuesday, January 24, 2023
You my dear readers may have noticed that your old columnist is not really hesitant to express my political feelings in what I write here. Few probably also know that I have been the scribe of my high school graduating class attempting to keep all our members informed of the happenings of each other as we progress through life. Our numbers are down to about half of us still living and that probably has something to do with having a large number of birthdays.
So last week I sent out a short message to my classmates who are computer literate and use the easy communication of our internet. Usually, those messages have an obituary attached of one of our number recently deceased. No recent deaths so I just mentioned that with all the illegal border crossings that are constantly on the TV news so far to my knowledge, none of those illegal immigrants have come to our area here in southwestern Nebraska. I also included a blurb about the fact that mostly democrat-controlled cities, proudly stating that they are sanctuary cities, the democrat mayors are complaining about being shipped large numbers of those illegal immigrants. It is costing large sums of money and they are running out of places to house them. Then in typical fashion, for me, I stated “Don’t blame me; I didn’t vote for him to be president”.
That didn’t go over well. Two classmates promptly wrote back, addressed to the whole group of addressees, that they love to hear of the happenings of all our classmates but that political comments have no place in the messages that the old scribe sends. Not hard to figure out their political leaning! Then too I also received several comments, addressed solely to me, that they agreed with my observations. Tickled me and I will take the comments to heart as I do love them all.
There is a big celebration coming up this summer to mark the 150th anniversary of the founding of our near neighbor Culbertson. Four days in July the 1st through the 4th culminating in their Independence Day parade. I’ll be there driving my 98-year-old Model T Ford doctor’s coupe.
Culbertson was important in the development of this area. Records show that it was founded in 1873 and the railroad reached the village a few years later. Many of the pioneers with the intent to homestead free land came via the railroad and it was a boon to receiving necessary goods, especially building materials, for the growing population. Prior to the arrival of the railroad large numbers of cattle also passed through Culberson as they were driven from Texas to the U P rail terminal at Ogallala.
Things are still in the planning stages but I’m sure that there will be details to come. Mark your calendars as it will be a worthwhile event. Those “Roosians” that settled the area knew how to have a good time.
It has been rather fun watching the reaction as documents marked classified are being found at President Biden’s residences. Talk about karma as we watched the democrats glee when similar marked documents were found in Former President Trump’s possession. For me, it is interesting that Trump kept his behind padlocks and for Biden, they were carefully stored in his garage and other unsecured places. Those places where son Hunter entertained representatives from the Chinese Communist government. Looks bad but of course, we have no inkling what was in those classified documents.
In my past Air force career I held a Top Secret Clearance and have an understanding how such was protected. When we were studying such material we were in a secure room and there was a second person present at all times. Evidently, politicians have different standards. Maybe it is time to make some changes!
My fellow columnist Rhonda Graff came through with a good one this past week. She has gotten her form back writing well as she did for the Gazette in the days before children and family took precedence—as they should. Keep up the good work my friend.
That is how I saw it.
