Biden's border visit
Tuesday, January 10, 2023
Yea! President Biden checked the box. He can now truthfully state that indeed he has been to the border. He went to El Paso, one of the spots where generally few illegals cross and had pictures made in the shadow of the big tall wall that President Trump had built. Then too El Paso had cleaned up the litter that the migrants had left behind. All very sanitary, spic and span. Okay, that box is checked and now we can get back to spending and raising taxes. I don’t know about you but the whole thing is a bit frustrating.
The numbers of illegal migrants coming across our border are staggering. Nearly 2 million just last year. In comparison that is larger than the number of residents in Nebraska. Where they will be going to live, work and raise their families is a bit of a mystery to me. Still, I have a bit of sympathy for them as all seem to be escaping from hellholes of countries like now communist Venezuela. Hopefully, they are not bringing their politics with them and will work to become true Americans like the Irish, the Germans and all the ones who came and assimilated since our country's beginning.
I do have a hate for those who sneak into our country carrying and transporting deadly drugs that are killing thousands of our youth. That has to be stopped. Countries, primarily Communist China, are the primary producers of the ingredients to make those drugs that the Cartels are manufacturing in Mexico and then transporting into our United States. Hopefully, that is a subject that President Biden is discussing with the President of Mexico today. President Trump was working on a solution to the problem but of course, when Biden became president all those efforts were set aside. We’ll see.
The House of Representatives put on quite a show with their 15 roll call votes before they finally elected Kevin McCarthy speaker. After each vote failed to get a majority the hold-out representatives negotiated rule changes to the way that they proceed which was really democracy in action. Now we will see if their proceedings progress in the way the new rules dictate. Speaker McCarty will have a tough time because after the House passes a new law it still has to go before the Senate and needs to be signed by President Biden before it can go into effect. Hope reigns eternal that things will actually get better and so we shall see.
Grannie Annie and the old guy went on a road trip last Saturday for a little change of pace. Oberlin to check at the airport in search of the package of log books for my old Champ airplane. No luck. Then on to Norton to meet an old friend for lunch. Destination Kitchen, 115 W Main St., a pizza place with a really good salad bar and a full menu of sandwiches and more. Like an old-time general store, it is a place with all sorts of kitchen utensils, and a quilt store connecting. It was a real treat and I would highly recommend it for a nice place to enjoy a date with your spouse or a couple of friends.
Checked in at the Norton airport to visit with another fellow flight instructor to see how one of my flying students was progressing. Then on to Cambridge to search for more for my logbooks. Viola—found them so on back home.
Our little area around McCook was lucky with our last snowstorm which came quietly with very little drifting. Not far south the snow cover decreased to just a skiff. They too need the moisture and hopefully, more will come. For this old has been farmer it was sad to see way too many fields of dryland corn that wasn’t worth the expense of harvesting so then was just cut made into large bales destination a cattle feed yard. Some milo suffered the same drouth and didn’t make enough grain to be harvested. Hopefully, the wheat crop that was planted last fall will make it through the winter and receive enough rain in the coming days to make a reasonable crop yield. Pastures are short-cropped by cattle showing signs of our too-dry weather last summer and fall. Still knowing and understanding farmers I am sure they are praying for improvements to come and this will be a much better year than last. Again hope reigns eternal.
Still no response from the letter that I wrote to our US Representative Adrian Smith concerning the proposed solar farms headed to our area. Understandably so in that, it has been Christmas vacation and then the reorganizing of the House. Then too maybe our Representative is okay with the spending of government money for the project.
Those neighbors opposed to the project have been doing everything in their power to get the plant stopped. For all who are interested in the project, there will be an information meeting to explain more about the project this evening. It will begin at 6:15 p.m. today, Jan. 10, on the second floor of the Keystone Business Center, 402 Norris Ave. in McCook. Come and see for yourself. Todd Cappel will then be holding follow-up meetings same location. You be the judge.
That is the way I saw it.
