Area's best basketball teams with 2023 drawing near

The area’s best high school basketball varsity team records as action resumes in some holiday tournaments today.

Maywood-Hayes Center boys are 8-0 with two tourney titles already and only one game closer than 19 points.

May-Hay girls are also 8-0 with a defense allowing less than 27 points a contest. Their average winning margin has been nearly 35 points.

McCook boys are 6-1 and have scored 55 points or more in every game. Their best offense was just before the holiday break: an 89-79 double OT win at Holdrege on Dec. 17.

Dundy County-Stratton boys are 5-1 with their only loss to M-HC in the Cattle Trail Tourney finale. The Tigers have topped 70 points in four of these victories.

Southern Valley girls are 6-2 already owning wins over Cambridge, Southwest and Hitchcock County.

Decatur Community (Kan.) girls are 5-1, having won five straight since an opener vs. Wauneta-Palisade.

The Wauneta-Palisade girls are 5-2 with a thre-game win streak.

The Hitchcock County boys are 4-2 despite practicing just a few days following their D-2 state football title.
