1991 was just a few years ago, right?
Friday, June 17, 2022
I have to tell a funny on myself. I was reading a 1991 Gazette that I had found and thought, “I’d write an article about this stuff but 1991 isn’t that long ago.” Really Susan, think about these facts. Your youngest son was still in high school in 1991, and now his eldest daughter has graduated from Hays State with her Masters. Or try this, you had no grandchildren in 1991, now you have 11 and your eldest grand-daughter has presented you with two (of the cutest in the world) great-grandchildren. No, 1991 wasn’t that long ago, well, 32 years but who is counting?
From the July 20, 1991, McCook Daily Gazette: “ Chris Wiemers of McCook shot an 85 Friday at Torrey Pines and finished in the top 35 among more than 250 golfers in the Optimists Junior World of Golf National Tournament. He opened the tourney Tuesday with a 75 and followed that up with a 71 Wednesday when the tournament cut narrowed the 250-plus field to the best 60 scores.”
“Three members of the McCook Lodge 135 AF&AM were honored at a regular communication recently. Fifty-year pins were presented to Wendell P. Cheney and Benjamin F. Hormel, and the Jordan medal, recognizing the oldest living Mason with respect to membership, was presented to Charles D. Rees.” Rees had been a member for 64 years.
“Help Sow the Seeds of Citizen Service-Citizens of the McCook Area are joining together to form the George W. Norris Foundation. We believe he was one of America’s greatest lawmakers and we want to use his life of service as an inspiration to this generation and generations to come. We invite you to join us in this effort. Your contributions are needed to help form a non-profit corporations and pay other start-up costs.” This large ad asked that you send donations to the George W. Norris Foundation, Ruth Leopold, Treasurer.
Flora Lundberg Realty had a 3 bedroom, 3 bath ranch on North Cherokee priced in the 60’s and Worthy Implement and Motor Co., had a one-year-old GMC 4-wheel drive, half ton pickup for $ 13,700. You could buy a new 535 Baler for $16,404 at Southwest Implement and rent a newer 2-bedroom apartment with all appliances and central air on West F for $ 295.00 a month.
“Sheriff Gene Mahon requested $150,300 for the sheriff’s budget and $151,980 for the jail budget. Commissioners tentatively approved $145,260 for the sheriff’s budget and $144,320 for the jail budget, a total decrease of .5% from 1990-91.”
Finally at the Westview Plaza WAL-MART you could buy a 12 Pack of Pepsi for $2.97. I should have stocked up!
