McCook still leading Class B events, but others closing

LINCOLN, Neb. — Class B’s fastest 400-meter relay times are getting closer just like the ultimate showdown at Omaha Burke Stadium next month.
Just since Saturday, McCook’s three closest pursuers have ran their best times all season.
The Bison foursome of juniors Jacob Gomez-Wilson, Adam Dugger, Lucas Gomez-Wilson and senior Cole Thomas still own Class B’s best time (43.57) according to athletic net.
Yet Grand Island Northwest zoomed to No. 2 (43.86) during Monday’s Central Nebraska Track Championships.
Adams Central reached No. 4 (44.13) at that same meet while Waverly ran its fastest of 43.92 at Saturday’s Yowell Classic for Class B No. 3.
The Bison skipped running relays at Friday’s Don Bader Invite for a logical reason: wildfires were sprouting near Cambridge and other areas along their regular route home.
Hopefully, conditions will be calmer for Saturday’s Southwest Conference meet at Gothenburg (11 a.m. start).
Other Bison in the Class B leaders include sophomore Alex Messinger, who’s soared to No. 4 with his 43’10” triple jump at Lexington.
Dugger still holds Class B’s No.1 mark this season of 45’2 1/2” at Aurora on March 25.
Senior Branson McDonald also leads Class B at 15’, and now junior Hayden Norgaard is tied for eighth following his career-best 13’6” also in breezy Lexington.
On the girls’ side, senior Sierra Kotschwar recently broke McCook High’s discus record and that 134’6 1/2” mark holds No. 4 in Class B.
Junior Shawna Wilkinson’s still finish among 400-meter runners (1:00.79) just behind Elkhorn North basketball star Britt Prince (1:00.47). Expect that time to drop during these next few meets.
Pole vaulters Chayse Friehe and Hannah Crow have rose to tie for Class B No. 5 at 10’6”.
McCook senior Emma Dutton remains No. 8 among Class B 100-meter hurdlers (15.77) and part of a Bison 400-meter relay holding that same spot with their 51.74 Dutch Zorn time.
Wilkinson, senior Ainsley Taylor and junior Kennedy Walter ran the other three legs.
However, four Class B relays ran faster times last week: Beatrice (50.72), Norris (50.78), Gering (50.97) and Boone Central (51.11).
