McCOOK,Neb. — Pete Meints, age 73, of McCook, passed away on Friday, Feb. 11, 2022, at Community Hospital in McCook.

He was born Raymond Paul Meints on Nov. 8, 1948, to Paul and Wilma (Handle) Meints in Stratton, Neb. His grandmother gave him the nickname “Pete” as a young boy and the name stuck.
Pete grew up near Palisade, Neb., and graduated from high school in Wauneta, Neb., with the Class of 1967. Shortly after graduation, Pete joined the United States Navy. He served his country honorably until his separation in October of 1971. Pete was awarded the National Defense Service Medal for his service.
Pete returned to Southwest Nebraska, where he worked at area Ford dealerships in McCook and Imperial, Neb. He also worked for Western Diesel and for Great Guns in the oil fields. In 1995, Pete purchased the garage on B Street in McCook where he opened Pete’s Garage.
Pete married Geraldine Brown on July 10, 1993. The couple made McCook their home where they managed their own businesses, cared for a large garden, and rescued cats. Pete was a longtime member of American Legion Post No. 304 in Wauneta. He was a founding member of the Prairie Dawgs Car Club, where he organized their first Rod Run. He was also a member of Southwest Nebraska Antique and Rod Club.
Pete was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include his wife, Geraldine Brown-Meints of McCook; son, Chris Meints of Valparaiso, Ind.; granddaughters, Samantha (Mike) Buhler of Boston, Mass., and Shelby (Mitch) Hooper of Salcha, Alaska; and great-grandson, Henry Buhler.
Visitation will be today, Feb. 17, 2022, until 6 p.m., at Herrmann-Jones Funeral Chapel in McCook. The family will be present to greet friends from 4-6 p.m.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Friday morning, Feb. 18, 2022, at Herrmann-Jones Funeral Chapel in McCook with Pastor Lonnie Felcher officiating and military honors. Cremation will follow services.
The family asks that you drive your classic vehicles, hotrods, or project cars as we will honor Pete with one last cruise around McCook following services.
