Trojans, Wolves capture tough second victories

AMBRIDGE, Neb. — Paige Klumpe hit seven of eight shots and Autumn Deterding pulled down 16 rebounds during Cambridge’s 53-43 win over Wauneta-Palisade Friday.

Klumpe’s 15 points topped the 2-0 Trojans while Deterding and sophomore Jalen Kent netted nine apiece.

Leah Downer added eight points as she buried her only attempt from three-point range.

The visiting Broncos (1-1) kept battling despite falling behind 30-21 by intermission.

Sophomore Peyton Cox poured in 17 points to lead all scorers. Classmate GraCee Goings sent 11 through the nets, hitting two three-pointers.

Senior Alexa Sandman and junior Chloe Stehno both corraled eight rebounds, but W-P only shot 28 percent overall.

M-HC 52, SW 49

BARTLEY, Neb. — The Maywood-Hayes Center girls certainly earned their 2-0 start, conquering a great challenge from Southwest on Saturday.

Junior Olivia Hansen’s 24 points led the Wolves with another huge 26 points equally divided from senior Stevie Handsaker (13) and junior Alexis Wood (13).

Hansen hit three of four shots from beyond the arc. Junior Maddie Doyle moved inside for eight rebounds.

It was just enough to offset junior Caylin Barnett’s 17 points, 12 rebounds for 1-1 Southwest.

Bailey Truska drilled two triples en route to 12 points. Freshman Allison Van Pelt went two-for-two for four points.

The Wolves were coming off a 47-36 win over Wallace Friday night where they led 16-1 after one quarter.

Hansen’s 14 points, Handsaker’s 13 and 10 for Wood again provided great M-HC balance.

Handsaker hit both three-point attempts.

Freshman Reagan Stengel stepped up to make 6-of-6 free throws.

Senior Mariah Gardner’s game-high 19 points paced Wallace (0-2) with junior Karlie Finley securing 14 rebounds.

Rawlins 40,

Decatur Comm. 33

OBERLIN, Kan. — Freshman Tayten Dewey’s 14 points fueled the big Rawlins County rivalry win over Decatur Community in Kansas Friday evening.

The Buffaloes took charge with a 16-point third quarter where six girls hit shots. Mariyah Nichols, Michaela Rippe and Abby Micek each added six points.

Brynna Addleman’s 12 points and 12 rebounds led the Red Devils (0-1), who will play in this week’s Cattle Trail Tournament. Breyana Gehring added 10 points.

Paxton 43,

Med Valley 40

PAXTON, Neb. — Paxton took a double-overtime win even though Medicine Valley had a 58-37 rebounding edge on 14 apiece from senior Kaylyn Roblee and junior Milla Farr Friday night.

Sophomore Stella Heapy scored a game-high 24 points with 10 rebounds.

OXFORD, Neb. — Southern Valley evened its record at 1-1 with a home victory on Friday.

Tigers lose two

BENKELMAN, Neb. — The Dundy County-Stratton girls opened against two strong opponents last weekend.

They lost a 50-31 home opener to Yuma, Colo., Friday evening but kept working and outscored those Indians 13-6 during that final quarter.

On Saturday, Goodland (Kan.) delivered a 70-10 victory over DC-S.

The hosts took a 24-0 lead through one quarter which reached 59-4 entering quarter four.

No individual stats were obtained for the DC-S girls (0-2), who play in this weekend's Cattle Trail Tournament at McCook.
