Bison softball girls get close, but Cozad prevails

COZAD, Neb. — McCook’s softball girls dropped a 4-0 deficit to 5-4 before Cozad finished an 8-4 varsity victory Tuesday night.

The Bison (2-5 record) saw more great hitting from Lainey Schmidt and Brenna Carner, who both blasted a double among their two hits.

Junior Kennedy Walter also ripped a double as McCook totaled eight hits overall against those 7-3 Cozad Haymakers.

Yet Cozad totaled 13 while putting three runs on the board during both hits third and sixth at-bats.

They slowed recent McCook moment since the Bison beat both Holdrege and Lexington in Saturday’s Holdrege Invitational.

Another game with Holdrege was postponed tonight due to expected rainy weather.

The Bison will host their annual tournament on Saturday where six teams will visit.

Other highlights from the Cozad contest included senior Graci Nelson singling and droving home a run.

Tesa Nelson added another RBI while sophomore Izzy Renner singled and scored.

Senior Jada Berry started again in the pitcher’s circle to follow her super one-hit shutout against Lex on Saturday.

Berry worked five innings where she walked just two and struck out three.

Freshman Briley Morgan worked one scoreless inning, allowing no hits with one strikeout.
