McCOOK, Neb. — The McCook Bison blasted Class B foe Kearney Catholic, 9-0, then shook off a Friday loss to Kearney and won their home tennis invitational on Saturday.

McCook scored 62 points while going 5-0 through three of the top four varsity divisions.

The Bison did get a challenge from Lexington’s 55 points which was more than Scottsbluff (23), Holdrege (18) and Gering (10) combined.

Coach Matt Wiemers offered these remarks about the entire opening boys’ tennis weekend.

“Good road trip to Kearney,” Wiemers commented. “ Pleased with the way ur team competed on the courts and battling through high humidity and hot temps. Picked up some nice wins against a good Kearney Catholic team. Kearney High gave us a tough challenge.

Isaac Hinze and Lincoln Michaelis picked up a hard fought 3 doubles match and then turned around and won their singles matches.

Lincoln played well in his match, which was close until the end. And Isaac pulled away at the end of his match which was nice to see. We talk a lot about it’s not how you start, but how you finish. It was great to take all 32 kids to Keanrey and get them some competition. And our Junior Varsity kids saw some success throughout the day.

Saturday we continued to see some excellent play. Isaac, Lincoln went undeafted and were not pushed, which was to be expected with the field of teams they faced, especially after battling solid Kearney Catholic and Kearney High teams. Nathaniel Miller and Evan Humphrey pulled out a 8-6 win against a very good Holdrege team, then beat a competitive Lexington team 8-3. Joel Miller and Jadon Karp continue to show improvement and went 4-1 on the day.”
