GOTHENBURG, Neb. — Baton passing has never looked better this season along with McCook Bison who were using poles or clearing bars Thursday afternoon.

All three Bison relays ran their fastest times of 2021 as two took home Dutch Zorn Invitational championships.

Senior Talyn Campbell became an award winner when he cleared 13’6” for yet another career-high pole vault.

Meanwhile, Bison high jumpers soared to exactly half of the top six spots which — despite some McCook injuries— helped those Bison still place No. 3 among 10 Dutch Zorn teams competing.

"We had many other good marks throughout the afternoon despite the poor weather,” coach Tom Sughroue proclaimed on gray, chilly Thursday though wind and moisture mainly stayed away. “We are hoping we will only see improvements from here on out.”

Throwers Torrington Ford, Isaiah Stoddard and Dylan Paschall all placed three against some powerhouse talent from the Aurora Huskies.

Long jumpers like Dylan Beaumont (second) and Logan Havlicek (fifth) stepped up to earn their highest varsity places this season.

Senior Ty Stevens and junior Brendan Gillen both hit high jump career bests to join senior Mark Arp among the top six. They’ll all keep aiming higher towards Arp’s 6’4” which earned a Class B state medal two years ago.

Campbell just keeps vaulting higher whether there’s wind, rain or any other typically unpredictable April track-field weather.

Sughroue has clearly found some great relay combinations even though nearly a month remains before the all-important district meet.

Nate Reiners ran on both the champion 400 and 1600-meter relays.

Sophomore Jacob Gomez-Wilson took the baton from Reiners to finish that 400 victory. Sprinters Arp and Kaden Jernigan conquered the first two legs.

Reiners, Brandon Tucker, Cole Thomas and senior Alec Langan capped the Zorn Invite with their 1600 victory.

Plus 3200-relay runners Weston Walgren, Patrick Gross, Logan Farr and Landyn Roth ran their fastest time this season (6:50.91). They were second only to champion Sidney.
