MCC slugger captures national 'Player of Week'

McCOOK, Neb. — McCook Community College sophomore Ricardo Hernandez (Ponce, Puerto Rico) has become the second straight player from the McCook Community College baseball team to win Region IX player of the week honors, and fourth player this season to claim top weekly honors.

Hernandez, a catcher/designated hitter, hit home runs in four straight games and for the week of April 5-11 he had 11 hits in 15 at bats, hit five homers, four doubles, 10 RBIs, 30 total bases and a 2.00 slugging average and he batted .731 for the week.

MCC went 3-1 during the week and 2-1 in Empire League play.

For the season Herandez has played in 24 games and is batting .411 with a .496 on-base average and is slugging .830. In 112 at bats he has 46 hits, 12 doubles, 11 home runs and 49 RBIs – which is eighth most in the nation.

Hernandez joins three other teammates who have won top weekly honors this season. Freshman Daniel Bannon (Sydney, Australia) was named player of the week last week (March 29-April 4), freshman Zack Beatty (freshman, Maple Park, Ill.) claimed the honor Feb. 23-28, and freshman Max Mrakovcic (freshman, Sydney, Australia) was named the Region IX pitcher of the week March 1-7.
