MCC swamps Southeast with two shutouts
The McCook Community College softball team swept a pair of games over Southeast Community College Tuesday winning the first game 8-0 and taking the second one 19-0. MCC banged out 21 hits on the afternoon and Lady Indian pitchers struck out 16 Storm hitters in the double shutout.
“It was a good day for the team, they hit the ball really hard, played very good defense and pitched well,” said MCC Coach Kevin Kaalberg. “It was a total team effort.”
Sophomore Anna Wilcox (Victoria, British Columbia) started both games, pitched four innings in Game 1 and threw the first three innings in Game 2. In her seven innings, she allowed two hits and struck out 12. Freshman Lana Armsbury (freshman, Omaha Westside) came on in relief both games, and pitched three scoreless innings with four strikeouts.
Freshman Taylor Thein (West Branch, Iowa) homered in the first game (her second of the year) and freshman Ashland Baca (Byers, Colo.) hit a home run in Game 2, her 12th of the season.
“I was proud of them for the way they maintained focus and discipline throughout both games, which isn’t always easy to do in games like this,” Kaalberg said.
With these two wins in Nebraska Community College Athletic Conference action, MCC takes over first place in the standings with a 5-1 record. SCC falls to 1-5 (and 2-14 overall.) Central Community College is second at 6-2 (8-14 overall) while North Platte is third, 2-6, (6-22 overall).
MCC improves to 27-9 on the season. Tuesday was the first of six straight NCCAC games. MCC is home April 20 against Central CC and travels to Beatrice April 22 for two games with Southeast CC. MCC’s final NCCAC games will be April 28 at North Platte.
The Lady Indians have eight games left with Region IX opponents with doubleheaders April 24-25 at Western Nebraska and will close the regular season at home April 30-May 1 against Northeastern Junior College.
Trinidad State leads the Region IX standings at 14-4. MCC and NJC are tied for second, both one game back of Trinidad. The Lady Indians are 13-5 and the Lady Plainswomen are 11-3.

GAME 1 – McCook CC 8, Southeast CC 0: The Lady Indians applied steady pressure to the Storm, scoring twice in the first inning, and three times in the second and third innings to snag the five-inning win.
Two Southeast errors and a dropped third strike led to two MCC runs in the first inning. Taylor Thein drove in the first run of the second inning on a bunt single. Sophomore Alice Midiri (Condove, Italy), followed with an RBI double to put MCC up 4-0 and the Lady Indians added a fifth on a fielder’s choice.
Sidney Sansregret (Surrey, British Columbia) lined a one-out double in the third. Thein followed with a two-run home run. Alexis Cortez (Aurora, Colo.) tripled and scored on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Taryn Jenkins (Aldergrove, British Columbia) for the 8-0 lead.
Anna Wilcox pitched four innings of shutout, hitless ball, walking one striking out seven. Lana Armsbury pitched the final inning, allowing one hit and fanning three.
Midiri and Thein both had two hits in the game, MCC had seven. SCC committed five errors
GAME 2 – McCook CC 19, Southeast CC 0: The Lady Indians offense picked up where they left off in the second game scoring seven runs in the first inning, five in the second, six in the third and one in the fourth.
Sophomore Emily Arp (McCook) and Charlyee Ortiz (Maud, Okla.) both had three-hit games. Arp drove in three with a pair of doubles and Ortiz drove in two runs. Taylor Thein had a two-hit game with three RBIs. Both her hits were doubles.
Anna Wilcox pitched the first three innings, allowing two hits, no walks and she struck out five. Lana Armsbury went the final two innings of scoreless relief in the pitching circle. She allowed five hits, no walks and struck out one.
Ashland Baca led off the fourth inning with a solo home run for the final run of the game.
