Wolves send both teams into holiday title games

PAXTON, Neb. — A thrilling 52-51 win over Paxton on Monday means both Maywood Hayes-Center basketball teams will play for tournament titles tonight.

Coach Kolby Hamilton’s boys improved to 6-2 as handed perennial area power Paxton only its second loss in seven games this season.

The Wolves took a 20-14 lead through one quarter, then fell behind 44-42 before rallying through that final quarter.

Meanwhile, the M-HC girls needed no drama to reach 8-0 with a 50-30 victory over those tourney host Tigers.

Senior Jaycee Widener netted 18 points and sophomore Ashlin Broz 14 to put the Cattle Trail Tourney champs in position for a second pre-Christmas title.

Sophomore Olivia Hansen added eight points, Kiley Hetjmaek and four from junior Stevie Handsaker.The Wolves meet state volleyball tourney foe Mullen (7-1) at 5 p.m. to decide a girls’ Paxton Invite champion today.

MH-C boys also play Mullen (5-2) around 6:45 p.m. in the tourney finale.
