Thomas Daniel Sughroue
April 30, 1938 - Oct. 21, 2020
CULBERTSON, Neb. — On Oct. 21, 2020, the Sughroue family lost a loving father, husband, uncle, cousin, and friend following a hospital stay at Tri Valley Health System in Cambridge, Neb., as a result of Covid-19.
Thomas Daniel Sughroue, 82, the youngest child of Frank and Johanna (Schutte) Sughroue, came into the world on April 30, 1938, in their home near Indianola, Neb. Tom received his education and graduated from Indianola High School. He was a member of the United States Army Reserve from 1956-1964. Tom received two years of further education at McCook Community College. He spent most of his working career in construction, eventually with his own business, Sughroue Contruction Company.
Tom was easy to recognize in his overalls and flannel, work boots and cap. Always ready with a humorous quip, his presence was met with a smile and laughter. His hands were his craft and his precision his art; capable of transforming a piece of wood into a beautiful masterpiece. He loved the outdoors, whether hunting, fishing, working, or just sitting quietly watching the natural wonder of life unfold around him. He held a special love for the purple martins who made their migratory stop at the little hotel park he created for them.
Tom is survived by his loving wife and partner of many years, Mary Vrbas of Culbertson; children: Michelle (Kent) Wurm of Shawnee, Kan., Crystal Sughroue of Hastings, Neb., Stephanie (Bill) Haag of Danbury, Neb., Tom (Kim) Sughroue of Indianola and Josh (Jessica) Vrbas of McCook, Neb.; 12 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; sister, Nellie Ryan; sisters-in-law, Jean (surviving wife of Don) and Marge (surviving wife of Charles); former wife, Sharon Deon; many nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.
He is welcomed into the loving embrace of his mom (Johanna), dad (Frank), brothers, Gerald (wife, Ann), Charles (deceased wife, Rita), Don, Jim (wife, Leah), sisters, Francis (Clayton Green, Joe Allen) and Mary Lyons (Dale) and brother-in-law, Jim Ryan (deceased husband of Nellie), as they share eternal afterlife together. I can hear the laughter now.
Burial and memorial services will be at a future time due to the current situation involving the disease that resulted in the loss of Tom and so many others around the world. Service announcements will be posted when available. Memorials may be left to the family of Thomas Sughroue for future designation. Online condolences may be left at herrmannfh.com. Herrmann-Jones Funeral Chapel is entrusted with arrangements.
