Trojan stays focused at state; SWC rules Class C
COLUMBUS, Neb. — Best friend Chloe Besler and every Cambridge Trojan fan had to be proud of how sophomore Macy Jones finished Class C state golf on Tuesday.
Jones parred two of the final three holes which pulled her into a tie for 35th place among 90 state qualifiers competing at the Columbus Elks Club course.
It was quite the finish after Jones double-bogeyed or bogged her previous seven.
"Macy's really focused more of her energy on how to respond to adversity rather than focus on the adversity itself," Cambridge coach Lyle Calvert observed. "Macy's developed a more competitive mind set. Her ability to focus only things she can control has generated a lot of success this season."
Jones actually shot a consistent 101 and 102 for 203 through the 36 Class C state holes.
She shared 35th place with Grayson Shirley from Omaha Brownell Talbot, Boone Central freshman Taylor Beierman and Valentine junior Becca McGinley.
Jones showed tenacity just like during last week's crucial district tournament where she conquered challenges with "wise choices that continued to keep her in contention," according to Calvert.
"I think having her best friend, Chloe Besler, on the team has played a big role in Macy's success," Calvert explained. "Chloe is the one that convinced Macy to join the team in the first place, and is great about calling Macy up to go play. These girls put in a lot of time this summer and they improved a lot."
Besler barely missed returning to state after helping the Trojans take third among all Class C teams last season.
The Southwest Conference's Broken Bow Indians won state (732) by 46 strokes over Lincoln Christian (778) with West Point-Beemer earning third (785).
"I was sad for Chloe that her season had to end, but it was very heartwarming to see these girls' love for each other," Calvert said. "Macy shared some tears with Chloe and Chloe shared some joy with Macy. They shared in each other's emotions throughout the season."
Besler has completed her Trojan golf career, but Jones can return with teammate Jordyn Cross to lead next year's Cambridge golf squad.
"I hope that Macy recognizes the impact that the support has played in her development," Calvert concluded.
