Bison took lead on Class A No. 4 at Lincoln invite

LINCOLN, Neb. — McCook took a quick 3-0 lead on Class A No. 4 Lincoln East but eventually lost to three tough softball foes at Saturday's Lincoln Southeast Invitational.
The Bison (8-20 record) jumped on those 20-7 Spartans when Abbie Johnson and senior Ashley Miller both walked in front of Jada Berry's RBI-double.
Carly Peters then singled home both Miller and Berry for the 3-0 Bison advantage.
They held a 3-1 advantage into the third before East plated three runs to move ahead, 4-3.
Senior Savannah Donovan drilled another double for McCook. However, the Spartans added two more scores which finished their 6-3 victory.
Senior Brooke Evans pitched four innings where she held the Class A power to four runs on six hits.
McCook earlier dropped an 8 a.m. contest against familiar foe Omaha Skutt, 8-0.
The Bison and Class B No. 2 Skyhawks played for a state tournament spot during last fall's district finals.
Hannah Camenzild held McCook to one Peters single in Saturday's contest. Abbie Johnson drew the only Bison walk.
McCook's Saturday finished with a 12-1 loss against Class A Fremont even though senior Emma Kehler doubled home Natalie Roberts for an early 1-0 margin.
Johnson and Peters both singled to provide the only other Bison hits.
"Played two really good games against the top teams and then dropped a game vs a lesser A," coach Jason Cochran commented.
Kehler pitched three innings, striking out two and walking just one. She allowed five earned runs as the Bison also committed six defensive errors.
McCook finished a tough 0-6 week that started with a 2-0 thriller vs. Class B No. 1 Hastings Tuesday evening. The Bison battled evenly at 0-0 until Hastings' eighth-inning, walk-off home run.
Next action will be a McCook game at Minden Tuesday evening.
The junior varsity contest has been canceled, according to McCook High officials today.
First pitch for the varsity game is set at 6 p.m.
