MCC women shut down Lopes in Lamar
LAMAR, Colo. – The McCook Community College women’s basketball team rolled over Lamar Community College Friday, 74-42.
“I thought we came out and really guarded well tonight,” said MCC Coach Brandon Pritchett. “We didn’t shoot it well in the first half but we forced Lamar to take contested shots.”
The Lady Indians held Lamar to 25-first half points and 22.6 percent shooting on 31 shots. MCC shot 38.5 percent but were able to take a 43-25 half-time lead.
“In the second half we executed better and took care of the ball,” Pritchett said.
The Lady Indians stepped it up and shot 52.3 percent in the second half and 44.9 percent for the game and scored the comfortable win despite making just six of 20 shots from the 3-point line (30 percent). MCC out-rebounded Lamar 52-41.
Defensively, the Lady Indians held Lamar to identical shooting numbers in the second half – seven of 31.
Sophomore Makenna Bodette (Colorado Springs) paced MCC offensively with 12 points, eight rebounds, and five blocked shots.
Freshman Niamh Kelshaw (Manchester, England) scored 11 points and picked up six rebounds.
Freshman Carla Torrubia Cano (Melilla Spain) led MCC with 10 rebounds and scored seven points.
Sophomore transfer Paula Rosello Mateu, (Barcelona, Spain), scored nine points had three assists and four rebounds.
“Everyone contributed tonight, this was a great team win especially on the road,” Pritchett said.
MCC improves to 16-5 and 3-2 in the Region IX south division.
The Runnin’ Lopes are 7-17 and 1-4 in the south sub-region.
The Lady Indians are right back on the road Tuesday for another key Region IX South tilt at Sterling, Colo., against Northeastern Junior College (10-9 headed into the weekend).
\On Friday MCC is back in the Peter and Dolores Graff Events Center to face Western Nebraska 19-1, and ranked third nationally, at 5:30 p.m. and then host Central Community College (9-9) Saturday, Feb. 8 at 2 p.m. for the annual Blue-Out games to raise money and awareness for children with disabilities. MCC spring royalty will also be announced at that game.
Softball update
SNYDER, Texas –The McCook Community College softball team wrapped up a four-game set in Texas Friday with a pair of losses to Vernon College 12-0 and 21-3.
MCC falls to 0-3 on the season and are scheduled to have their home opener Saturday against Garden City in a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
The Indians are set to play 14 home doubleheaders in their 60-game schedule.
