McCOOK, Neb.—Kathleen Mabel Steinke of Culbertson, passed away on Thursday morning, Jan. 11, 2020, at 76 years old.
Kathy was born Dec. 2, 1943, in Stratton, Neb., to parents, Ray Edward and Bess Mae (Murphy) Bunnell. She was the oldest of nine children. After graduating from Trenton High School in 1962, she married William Steinke on Nov. 25, 1962. Kathy and Bill farmed together three miles north of Culbertson for 57 years. One of the great joys in her life was raising their their sons. She was a proficient quilter and enjoyed discovering treasures for her collections at estate sales. She participated in a multitude of projects with the local women’s club. She kept a sizable garden and planted beautiful flowers every spring. Anyone who knew her praised her cooking. Kathy loved books, reading across many genres and subjects. She had a heart for taking in orphan animals and tending her many types of livestock. Through these many activities and more, Kathy developed relationships with family, friends, and the community. Kathy was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church in Culbertson.
Kathy exhibited generosity and compassion. She consistently cooked delicious food, a talent she learned from her mother. She always provided loving care for her family. Kathy was devoted to her mother, enjoyed relationships with her siblings, and traveled great distances to spend time with her grandchildren. Her nurturing spirit will be missed.
Kathy was preceded in death by her parents, Bess and Ray Bunnell; her brother, Larry and her sister, Jeanie.
She is survived by her husband, William; sons Sam, Dan, and Lonnie (wife, Katrina); grandchildren, Brooke (husband, Kyle), Alex, Quentin, and Anita; and siblings, Carol Vlasin, Ray Jr. “Sonny” (wife, Donna), Sharon Larson (husband, Vic), David Bunnell (wife, Michelle), Laurie Keeler (husband, Jim), and Don Bunnell.
Memorials may be given in her name to the Culbertson Rescue Squad or the Culbertson Trinity United Methodist Church.
Memorial services will be Friday, Jan. 17, 2020, at 11 a.m. at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Culbertson with Pastor Alisa Parde officiating. Private family inurnment at a later date.
