McCook sharpshooters lead GNAC girls' victory

COLUMBUS, Neb. — Junior Tiara Matson hit seven of 10 three-point attempts as McCook High’s girls blazed past Gering, 67-51, in their GNAC tourney finale Saturday afternoon.
Matson zipped 22 points total through the nets while junior classmate Liviya Wier scored a sweet 16.
Together, they hit nine three-pointers because Wier went two-for-four (50 percent) from long distance.
Sophomore Peyton Doucet became a force inside the arc, making six of nine shots (67 percent) for 13 more points.
Together, they fired the Bison to an 18-9 advantage through Saturday’s first eight minutes.
Gering closed within 30-24 by intermission, but a 26-point Bison third period ended any comeback hopes.
Junior Emma Kehler was a picture of efficiency, hitting both her shots for another four points.
Senior Brolin Morgan and freshman Shawna Wilkinson added four more points apiece. Sophomores Sierra Kotchwar and Riley Werkmeister made one two-point shot each.
The Bison showed more teamwork by delivering 19 assists. Doucet’s eight led the team and Morgan added six which teammates turned into big points.

Gering dropped to 2-10 this season despite 16 points from junior Cloe Fries.
The Bison shook off a second loss to North Platte in two weeks, 65-37, Friday afternoon.
Wilkinson’s 14 points paced McCook against the powerful Bulldogs.
Kotchwar added her season-best eight points, Wier scored seven, Matson five and Doucet 3.
Juniors Abby Orr and Gracie Haneborg each scored 17 to lead North Platte. The Bulldogs beat Scottsbluff, 64-54, to win GNAC on Saturday.
