Discoverers find way to withstand Bison rally
COLUMBUS, Neb. — Columbus High girls basketball held on for the victory after a 19-point lead was cut to just five during the first round of the Greater Nebraska Athletic Conference Tournament on Thursday at CHS.
Despite the close call, the Discoverers defeated McCook 47-36 at CHS and will face Scottsbluff at 5:30 p.m. today at home.
McCook (3-5) meets North Platte at 2 p.m. in a rematch of the Bulldogs’ 65-33 win at MHS on Dec. 20.
Logan Kapels scored four of her team-high 12 points during the first quarter to help Columbus take an 8-3 lead in the first eight minutes. CHS started finding its groove in the second and led 21-8 heading into halftime.
CHS kept rolling after the intermission and led 34-15 after three quarters, but a late McCook run cut the lead to just five points.
Junior Liviya Wier’s 15 points led the Bison charge and junior Tiara Matson added eight.
Yet late free throws secured the victory.
While Columbus High was excited to advance in the tournament, head coach David Licari said he knows they’ll have to perform better if they want to make a deep run.
“You’re always happy with a win for sure,” he said after the game. “If you can get a win, you take the win.”
Senior Brolin Morgan and freshman Shawna Wilkinson each scored five more points for coach Amy Scheil’s Bison.
Sophomore Peyton Doucet tossed in two points while junior Emma Kehler made one free throw.
The Bison continue GNAC play through Saturday’s final round.
