Pauline Shafer
Oct. 19, 1935 - Nov. 3, 2019
McCOOK, Neb. — Pauline Shafer, age 84, of McCook, passed away at her home on Nov. 3, 2019.
She was born in St. Joseph, Mo., on Oct. 19, 1935, to Paul and Opal (Beaumann) Geyer. She attended and graduated from high school in St. Joseph.
She met and was united in marriage to Billy Shafer in 1951 in St. Joseph. He preceded her in death in April of 2009. The couple moved from Missouri to Lincoln, Neb., before settling in McCook in 1959.
Pauline was an excellent baker, making peanut butter, chocolate chip and oatmeal (without the raisins) soft cookies, all without a recipe. Often a second bag was sent home to either the grandkids or her kids to enjoy. She was known as the “Cookie Grandma.” In the winter, she would make batches of peanut butter and chocolate fudge. She was a collector of salt and pepper shakers, finally told her family to stop buying her anymore. She crocheted potholders for anyone that would take one. She enjoyed pool, having a pool table center stage in her living room. She was a member of the American Pool Association (APA) and known as mom or grandma to those who played pool.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Paul and Opal; husband, Billy; two daughters, Billie Diane Shafer and Joan Stemper; and a grandson, Billy Joe Shafer.
Pauline is survived by her three sons, Robert and wife, LeAnn Shafer of Lincoln, Rick and wife, Dianne Shafer of McCook and Mike and wife, Heather Shafer of McCook; one daughter, Susan Tarnow of Kansas; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild.
