Indian baseball team wins 13-0 finale
STERLING, Colo. -- The McCook Community College baseball team wrapped up the season Monday with a 13-0 win over Northeastern Junior College to finish the season with a three-game sweep over the Plainsmen, a team that is advancing to the Region IX tournament as one of the top four teams in the Empire League.
On Monday,the Indians sent 15 hitters to the plate in the third inning and exploded for 10 runs in the game shortened to five innings by the run-rule.
“We played good today, the third inning was pretty fun to watch, with 10 runs and three home runs, our guys played well this weekend.”
A double by Tyler Clark-Chiapparelli (Austin, Texas) and an error led to two runs in the first inning. A Kade Wroot (North Platte) solo home run to lead off the second inning made it 3-0.
Two Plainsmen errors to start the third in front of a Trevor Pacheco (Pueblo, Colo.) home run made it 6-0. Ricardo Jimenez, (Hialeah, Fla.) singled in front of a Justin Lucas (Las Vegas) home run to make it 8-0. Singles by Beau Hawley (Greeley, Colo.) and Parker Kretzel (Thornton, Colo.) in front of an Angel Mojica (Denver) homer made it 11-0 and a two-run single by Pacheco put MCC up 13-0.
Freshman Braden Babcock, (Oshawa, Ontario) was the beneficiary of all the Indians offense picking up the win in four innings of work allowing two singles, two walks and four strikeouts.
Sophomores Spencer Ray (Greeley, Colo.), and Shaun Hickey (Summerville, New Brunswick) finished out the game combining for an inning of scoreless, hitless relief.
All nine position players had a hit and scored a run. Pacheco had a pair of hits and five RBIs, and Lucas had two hits.
“We have a good number of guys signed to four year schools with some more signing this week and working on finding a home for the rest of our sophomores which is ultimately why we are here,” Olsen said. “I am really excited for the guys we have returning and we have a great freshman class already signed ready to join them, really looking forward to next season.”
NJC falls to 29-25 and 20-16 in Region IX but the Plainsmen will play in the post-season tournament starting Thursday.
