Definitely not a 'Nothin-to-do town'

McCOOK, Neb. — Many complain that McCook is the community that country music artist Dylan Scott was referring to in his recent single titled “Nothin’-To-Do Town”. The McCook Area Chamber of Commerce would like to disagree.

The chamber is partner ing with the McCook High School Thespians to present a murder mystery at Sehnert’s Bieroc Café on Thursday, April 25. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. with the performance beginning at 7 p.m. Tickets are available from a thespian, the McCook Chamber, or Sehnert’s for $10 for the performance and dessert.

The presentation came about as the result of a business plan that MHS Senior Adrian Labay completed for one of her business classes. She researched the logistics of putting on a play with community businesses, and it became apparent that the performance could become a reality. Several of the actors in the performance will be underclassmen, giving them the opportunity to gain valuable performance experience.

The chamber’s golf tournament, The Shank Open, will begin at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 27th at Heritage Hills. According to chamber director Jamie Mockry, there will be several “gimmicks” throughout the tournament, which will add to fun. There are still openings for teams, as well as opportunities for volunteers to help.

The first “Third Thursday” event will take place on May 16. “By going downtown, the community seems to be really excited about it”, Mockry said. “It’s not a fund-raiser for the chamber, although individual groups may have fund-raisers; but that positive vibe is really cool.”

The May event will be a celebration of the completion of another school year and will include a teen dance hosted by McCook High School Youth Change Reaction from 6:30 to 9 p.m. on West D Street. The MHS jazz band will perform before the dance, from 6 to 6:30 p.m. Mockry is encouraging downtown businesses to remain open that night.

The chamber plans to have events every month, from May through September, on the third Thursday of the month.

The song goes, “We ain’t got no rooftop bars like they do on Broadway, It’s just a little town square, middle of nowhere. Ain’t even big enough to be a map dot, we ain’t got a lot, but we sure do a lot with the little bit that we got.” Maybe the songwriter is referring to McCook.
