Flood relief -- Church donates supper proceeds to storm victims
McCOOK, Neb. — Garden Prairie United Methodist Church, north of McCook on Highway 83, raised $1,173 for flood and blizzard relief at its free-will donation pancake supper Sunday, March 17.
Coordinators report they went through 15 dozen eggs and 200 sausage links and served innumerable pancakes as God's people came together to help victims of flooding and blizzards throughout so much of Nebraska.
State officials say the flooding and blizzards have caused $1.4 billion in damages, destruction and loss. At least four people have lost their lives.
Tunde Oladimegi, pastor of the Garden Prairie and Curtis Methodist churches, said Monday he thanks "all of you who gave toward the relief support to our Great Plains Church conference. I was overwhelmed at what we can do when we see a need as a church and we work together to reach out."
Tunde said that people can continue to help with donations by bringing checks to the churches or to his office in the church in downtown Curtis, at 402 Center Avenue. Tunde encourages, "Even if your are not a member of the United Methodist Church, please be a part of this very important venture."
The Great Plains Conference has more than 220,000 United Methodists across Kansas and Nebraska. Bishop Ruben Saenz Jr. urges United Methodists in the conference to donate to the conference's disaster response fund and conference churches to take up special offerings to assist in repair and rebuilding efforts.
