NORTH PLATTE, Neb. — McCook’s tennis girls certainly earned ice cream to go with all the sprinkles, snow-rain mix and more rain showers that struck their season opener Tuesday.

“Quite an array of weather today,” coach Matt Wiemers proclaimed as matches were eventually cut short.

The afternoon was long enough for Lexington and Hershey’s varsity players as McCook scored a 9-0, 9-0 double dual sweep.

McCook’s new trio of doubles teams went 64-3 which featured five 8-0 sweeps.

Neither No. 1 Riley Hansen/Kori Uerling nor No. 3 Kassidy Michaelis/Sydney Stewart lost a game all day.

“I was pleased with the play of our doubles teams,” coach Matt Wiemers confirmed. “They dominated play and got us off to a good start.”

The Bison didn’t struggle much during singles competition. Returning No. 1 Michaelis finished 16-1 to continue her super career.

Michaelis has placed second, first and fourth at her three Class B state meets.

Senior Macy Hill only dropped one game at No. 6 singles and classmate Delaney Jumps went 16-2 against her No. 5 singles foes.

They also teamed to dominate two No. 2 doubles matches 8-0, 8-3.

The Bison even conquered their only close varsity match of opening day. Stewart played extra games to down Hershey’s Carly Sexson, 9-7.

“The varsity continued to dominate play and looked much better (in dual two) against Lexington,” Wiemers observed. “Having the opening matches out the way, the girls settled in nicely.”

The weather never did settle down, but all those crazy changes from sun to rain to snow to sun to rain again didn’t distract a veteran coach from noticing one important fact:

“It’s early, but we really need to work on limiting our unforced errors,” he concluded.

McCook now targets its home debut where North Platte will join Hershey in challenging the Bison on Thursday.

First serves are set for 2 p.m. at both the McCook High and Elks City courts. Watch for results in the Gazette.
