Bison spring into action today

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. — Nebraska’s most dominant tennis team west of Lincoln returns today to wreak havoc on Hershey Panthers and Lexington Minutemaids.
The McCook Bison will dual each team starting at noon on North Platte’s home courts.
They’re aiming to repeat their 13-0 varsity dual record from a year ago.
Once again, coach Matt Wiemers’ squad will bring enough talent to challenge two or three teams at the same time.
“We’ll be traveling with a full team and splitting our JVs into two,” Wiemers explained. “One will play Hershey and the other will play Lexington. We return a talented and athletic group of girls.”
No. 1 foes will probably be feeling jumpy because Kassidy Michaelis is back for her final Bison tennis year.
Michaelis won the Class B No. 2 singles state title two years ago, then earned fourth among No. 1 singles last season.
Michaelis should have plenty of motivation since her 92-match win streak ended against Chloe Dworak of Lincoln Christian in last year’s state semifinals.
However, there are four other starting varsity seniors and 12 overall who will be playing their Bison grand finales this spring.
Sydney Stewart, Riley Hansen, Macy Hill and Delaney Jumps hit the courts today after McCook finished just five points from repeating as Class B state team champs.
Junior Kori Uerling completes the varsity lineup at No. 1 doubles with Hansen and No. 4 singles. She scored several varsity wins and leads all those talented non-seniors playing for McCook’s tennis team.
“This team is a competitive bunch,” Wiemers observed. “We look forward to the challenges of the season. “We have put in a lot of time in the off-season and are looking forward to it paying off this spring.”
Fans can see the Bison play home duals at 2 p.m. on Thursday.
