Bison swim-dive must wait for state

HASTINGS, Neb. — Let the waiting begin.
While the McCook High School swim and dive team will send four divers and several swim relay teams to the state championship meet, individual swimmers will need to wait until at least Wednesday to find out if their “secondary” times will hold up and earn them a spot next week at the Nebraska State Swim and Dive Meet in Lincoln.
The MHS swim and dive team spent the weekend in Hastings at the 2019 Greater Nebraska Conference meet and returned with several top 6 finishes, as well as many “secondary” times to better qualify for the state championship meet.
As long as they post a “secondary time” - times set by state officials - the relays should qualify for the state meet. Individuals must either have an “automatic time” or post a “secondary time” and be in the top 32 in the state.
McCook has several individual swimmers with secondary times, who must now wait to see if they make the top 32.
The relay team of Becca Tietz, Mollie Tate, Laurel Schmidt and Candace Coleman have posted secondary times in three events: 200 medley relay, 200 free relay and 400 free relay. The boys relay team of TJ Renner, Isaac Hegwood, Erik Graff and Ethan Spencer have a secondary time in the 200 free relay, qualifying MHS male swimmers for the first time since the 2001-02 season.
The divers already know they are headed to Lincoln next week and claimed 3rd through 6th at the GNAC meet Friday night in Hastings: 3, Syd Wier; 4, Erik Graff; 5, Spencer Reiners; 6, Caige Eaton.
MHS swim coach Lori Jumps said this year is is her most successful team in respect to their qualifying times for state.
“They are a very talented and hard working team,” Jumps said. “I’m very proud of how both the boys and girls team have qualified this year.”
