Roger Martin Sughroue

July 29, 1938 - Jan. 27, 2019

LINCOLN, Neb. – Roger Martin Sughroue went to be with his Savior, Jesus Christ, and his beloved parents, brother, Robert Sughroue, and grandparents on Sunday, Jan. 27, 2019, at 8:04 p.m., in Lincoln, Neb.

He was born in Indianola, Neb., on July 29, 1938, to Martin and Lena (Rayer) Sughroue. He graduated Indianola High School in 1956 and began his career in sales. In 1978, he relocated to Yuma and resided there until 2013. He worked in agriculture his entire life until his retirement in 2010. In 2013, he moved to California to be next to his son, Jay and daughter-in-law Terri.

Roger loved driving from Yuma to his ranch in Nebraska, driving to Mexico, driving to San Diego every Sunday and driving to see his grandchildren’s sporting events and other special occasions. Simply put, Roger found his greatest peace while driving and smoking his pipe.

In July 2018, prior to his 80th birthday, he moved back to Lincoln, Neb., to be near his son, Michael and daughter-in-law, Mary Anne. He loved spending his last days going to Nebraska Husker football games and being with his oldest son and their families.

Roger loved being in the open countryside of wherever he found himself, from the sandhills of Nebraska to the desert of Southwest Arizona. Roger loved going to church every Sunday, followed by a drive to somewhere. Roger brought happiness and laughter everywhere he went. He always had a smile on his face and brought a smile to those he met. Everywhere he went he made friends; people were drawn to his happiness and joy, and he leaves a lasting impact on their hearts.

He was a wonderful father to his sons, Michael and Jay, and an amazing grandfather to Katie, Leah, Emily, Tyler, Lindsey, Makayla and great-grandfather to Carson, Jace, Alissa and Aspen.

He is survived by his sons, Michael (Mary Anne) of Lincoln, and Jay (Terri) of La Quinta, Calif.; grandchildren, Katie Jo Saylor (Scott) of Goodyear, Ariz., Leah Michelle Carter (Noel) of Goodyear, Emily Rae McKain (Justin) of North Platte, Neb., Tyler Roger Sughroue (Madalyn) of San Diego, Calif., Lindsey Ann Sughroue of Rexburg, Idaho and Makayla Lee Sughroue of Provo, Utah; siblings, William “Bill” Sughroue and wife, Sue of Hastings, Neb., and Eva Hofman of McCook, Neb.

One of Roger’s favorite songs he enjoyed while driving was “It’s a Great Day to Be Alive” by Travis Tritt. This song exemplified his life as he was thankful for everyone and everything in his life.

Memorials may be given in his name to St. Catherine’s Catholic Church.
