Lorain Christopher Buethe

SAVANNAH, Ga. — Dr. Lorain Christopher Buethe, PhD, was born Dec. 4, 1928, on a family farm near Elk Creek, Neb. He passed peacefully at age 90 on Dec. 22, 2018, in Savannah.

Chris (Lorain) was preceded in death by his parents, Chris and Lydia Buethe; as well as his two sisters, Fern and Leona; and two brothers, Chet and Vic.

Chris was married to Patricia Romano in 1956 with her passing in 1962. Chris remarried Diane Downing later in 1962. She was laid to rest in 2009. He lived the majority of his adult life in Terre Haute, Ind., and Las Cruces, N.M.,where he and Diane retired.

A lifelong educator with numerous awards and accomplishments, Chris received his doctorate degree in secondary education. He exhibited multiple other talents such as cowboy poetry, storytelling, and watercolor artistry. “Cactus” Chris was a smart, kind, generous, and humorous person who “never met a stranger.”

He is survived by three sons and one granddaughter. Curt and Jay Buethe, from his first marriage, reside in Sullivan, Ind. Scott Buethe, stepson from his second marriage, lives in Savannah. Scott’s daughter, Allison (Buethe) Sadowski, lives in West Orange, N.J.
