Hayes, Kan., firm wins street bid
McCOOK, Neb. — A wide range of bids was received for the 2019 crack sealing of the city’s streets and alleys.
The McCook City Council, at its regular meeting Monday night, unanimously awarded the bid to Stripe and Seal LLC of Hays, Kan., for $36,000.
It was the lowest bid received. W Design and Associates checked the references of the company, that were positive.
A total of six bids were received for the project, with the highest at $164,000 from a company in St. Joseph, Mo. Other bids came from B and H Paving, Scott City, Kan., at $54,864, Shelco Construction, Elsie, Neb., $69,750, Highway Improvement, Inc., Sioux Falls, S.D., $86,400 and McCormick Excavating and Paving, Stratton, Colo., $110,323.
City council members commended city employees Monday night for the prompt snow removal city employees did in clearing the streets after the weekend blizzard. Mayor Mike Gonzales said he received several compliments from the public about “getting things done” and Councilman Gene Weedin also cited the snow removal. Weedin acknowledged the extra hours city employees put in for the snow removal, telling Kyle Potthoff, Public Works Director, “we appreciate the people in your department.”
After a public hearing, the council unanimously approved the application requested by McCook Lodging LLC, (Holiday Inn Express McCook), 711 north U.S. Highway 83, for a Class C liquor license (beer, wine, distilled spirits, on and off sale). McCook City Police Chief Ike Brown offered the only comment during the public hearing, that the license would not be out of line, due to similar licenses issued to businesses in the same vicinity.
Another consent agenda item approved by the council Monday night included the recommendation of the Fuel Contract Advisory Committee to continue the fuel purchase agreement for the calendar year of 2019 with Frenchman Valley Cooperative Inc., to buy fuel for city and county vehicles. According to the agreement, the Fuel Contract Advisory Committee makes a recommendation each year to county and city representatives in awarding the contract for bulk fuel purchase. Members of the committee are Kyle Potthoff, City of McCook Public Works Director, Marc Harpham, City of McCook Fire Chief, Alan Kotschwar, Red Willow County Sheriff and Jim Mullen, Red Willow County equipment operator.
Also at Monday night’s meeting, Cathy McDowell of CASA (Court-appointed special advocate) thanked Kyle Potthoff, Public Works director, for his department’s help in preparing the disc golf course at Kelley Park for CASA’s annual tournament, that took place a few months ago.
Potthoff said city employees, “who take great pride in their work,” deserved the recognition.
