McCook golfers finding groove with two medals

HOLDREGE, Neb. — Take a good look because the McCook golfers are gaining momentum down this season’s home stretch.
The Bison trio did not something not seen before in 2018: win two top 10 tournament medals as junior Brooke Stewart took seventh and sophomore Kaylie Puckett placed ninth at Thursday’s Holdrege Invite.
“Yes, we are finding a groove at the perfect time,” coach Joel Arterburn remarked with Class B district golf tournaments now just 10 days away.
Both Stewart (47-48) and Puckett (49-49) were remarkably consistent across the Holdrege home course.
Stewart almost moved up another spot but Hastings’ Courtney Burns (95) was able to win a tie-breaker for sixth place.
They were both just one stroke behind top five placer Anna Cafferty of Hastings.
Aurora’s Danica Badura separated from the pack, firing 75 and earning a 10-stroke win over Holdrege’s Emily Gustafson (85).
However, the Huskies (391) finished one stroke behind Broken Bow (39-0) in Thursday’s team title chase. Holdrege took third overall (397).
Cambridge (404) finished fourth among the 12 teams with Taylor Sayer firing 100 (49-51) followed by Lexie Sines and Ryann Lewis (101).
Karinne Jurey’s 102 completed that Trojan team total.
Dundy County-Stratton (593) earned eighth place as Angel Phannenstiel shot a round of 108.
McKinzie Baney was next at 121.
Southwest (602) was ninth and Rachel Moore’s 138 was best among Roughriders.
Junior Hannah Goltl added a 118 for the McCook golfers.
