MFL teams battling into overtime Wednesday
McCOOK, Neb. — Another Peyton known as Manning often saved the Indianapolis Colts, but a different Payton came to his Colts' rescue Wednesday night at Weiland Field.
The McCook Football League Colts were trailing 6-0 through three-plus quarters against their familar foe Chiefs.
Jackson Kerchal’s one-yard, first-quarter TD run seemed to be enough for the Chiefs. Just like many classic McCook Bison teams, the Chiefs’ great defense protected this 6-0 lead.
However, Payton Dellevoet finally found enough open grass to carry a pass from Alex Anthony 30 yards into six-point paradise.
The Colts also missed their one PAT attempt — so overtime would be needed to end a 6-6 deadlock.
Payton Dellevoet delivered again with heroics more like the late great Chicago Bears running back Walter Payton.
Dellevoet darted his way four yards to a second touchdown, and Anthony’s ensuing PAT put those Colts ahead 13-6.
The Colts soon celebrated a great seventh-eighth grade football win.
One score was also all that separated the rival Redskins and Cowboys in their earlier fifth-sixth grade showdown.
The game turned into a TD duel between Dante Horner and Quenten Terry.
Terry struck first with a one-yard blast followed by Ethan Schmidt’s PAT.
The Redskins led 7-0 until Horner zoomed around right end and got one final crushing block to finish his eight-yard TD journey.
Though the Cowboys missed their PAT, they took a 12-7 lead on Horner’s two-yard fourth-quarter score.
Yet Terry was far from finished. In fact, he was only warming up on another summer evening.
First, Terry rumbled 65 amazing yards and even added the PAT run to regain a 14-12 lead for his Redskins.
The Cowboys only needed one more score, but Terry tore those plans to shreds with his 49-yard clincher.
A final missed PAT didn’t matter as the Redskins triumphed 20-12.
The drama brings MFL to its season finales tonight at Weiland Field.
Those Cowboys will challenge the unbeaten Eagles at 6:30 p.m.
Undefeated seventh-eighth grade powerhouse the Ravens play an 8 p.m. finale against the Colts.
