Bison tennis girls blast through state openers

LINCOLN, Neb. — McCook senior Haley Potthoff’s first Class B state match was a huge success this morning.

Potthoff swept through opening No. 2 singles foe Kyli Hanna of Omaha Gross Catholic, 6-0 and 6-2, as the Bison begin defense of their Class B state team title.

Another two rounds will take place today at Lincoln’s Woods Tennis Center.

No. 7-seed Potthoff (29-7 record) moves into the second round against No. 10-seed Caitlyn Anderson from Lincoln Christian.

Anderson swept past Cameryn Rasmussen 6-1, 6-1 in another first-round match this morning.

McCook’s No. 2 doubles team followed the lead and dominated their opener.

Juniors Riley Hansen and Sydney Stewart (32-4 record) roared past Blair's Phoenixx Penke/Laura Dutton while only losing a single game, 6-0 and 6-1.

The fourth-seed Bison get set to play in today's second round against Crete seniors Danielle Blackledge and Claire Holling. Those Cardinals defeated Omaha Skutt 6-3, 6-3 earlier today.

McCook junior Kassidy Michaelis earned a first-round bye at No. 1 singles where she is needed No. 1.

She promptly dispatched of Gering's Zoee Smith 6-1, 6-1 to advance into today's quarterfinals.

Michaelis44-0) will meet No. 8-seed Brynn Sealock from Grand Island Central Catholic. Seasick has scored two wins already today, most recently a 6-4,6-1 win over Elkhorn No. 9 seed MacKenzie Grackle.

Finally, McCook's top-seed No. 1 doubles Syd Thompson and Cassiddy Beeby (36-3 record) didn't drop a game in their first match as they swept Omaha Gross Catholic's Harper Pivovar/Katie Ryan 6-0, 6-0. They are awaiting the winner between Ogallala and Kearney Catholic for today's quarterfinals.

McCook's No. 2 girls are all playing second-round matches.
