Lazy summer? Not around McCook YMCA

With school out for the summer this week, you may think things will calm down, schedules will become more relaxed, and we will just coast through the next few months.
But in reality, summer is when things really kick into gear.
So hang onto your hat for a brief overview of just a few things happening at the YMCA over the next few months.

It is never fun to close things down, but the YMCA’s men’s and women’s locker rooms will be unavailable - alternately - for use over the next few weeks.
As one of the most highly used areas of the YMCA, the locker rooms are in need of a fresh-coat of paint and updating.
There is never a great time to do this maintenance but the locker rooms are in high demand the next few months as summer swim lessons quick into high gear.
Beginning Monday, the women’s locker room will close until approximately Thursday, May 24.
Then, the men’s locker room will close for a new coat of paint.
A schedule will be posted outside the locker rooms for use of the family locker rooms, as well as the progress on the locker rooms.
Of course, this schedule depends on how the project proceeds and how fast the paint dries. Remember, this is a pool area where humidity is a constant battle, so please check the schedule if you are using the pool and locker rooms.

Summer Adventure Camp begins on Monday and throughout the summer, with a different weekly theme, ranging from experiment week to beach week.
The child-care program is open to those who have completed kindergarten and older.
Hours are 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. at a cost of $20 per day.
Parents can sign up their child by the day, week, month or even the whole summer if they are that organized. Yes, that is not my family.

Summer swim lessons begin after Memorial Day weekend.
The names of the classes have been changed to better represent what the kids are learning.
So if you have questions about where your child should be placed (or if you are like me and can’t remember which class your child passed last), please contact the YMCA to see where your child should be placed.
Registration is available online or at the YMCA service desk.

The YMCA will be home to THETA Day Camp this summer, beginning May 28.
Led by interns from the University of Nebraska-Kearney, the camp will focus on health, exercise, technology and aquaponics, with a curriculum set for each week.
The camp is open to kids ages 10-14 and thanks to Community Hospital, there is no cost.
Participants are asked to register for the entire summer, but may sign-up for a week at a time at www.mccookedc.com.
More information about the camp is also available on the McCook Economic Development’s website.

The YMCA is hosting an American Red Cross Bloodmobile on Tuesday, May 29. Appointments are available from 9 a.m.-3 p.m.
Just call the YMCA at 345-6228 to set a time and save a life.

And finally, Memorial Day is right around the corner which means changes to the schedule, including changing from winter to summer hours when the YMCA opens on Tuesday, May 29.
The YMCA will be closed Monday, May 28 for Memorial Day.
