Tigers edge Lions for last spot

CRAWFORD, Neb. — The Dundy County-Stratton golfers did just enough to edge Morrill Lions and claim that last D-5 state-qualifying golf team spot on Monday.
With senior Nathan Auffet placing third overall (85), the Tigers took that last tie-breaker to earn their place at North Platte’s Lake Maloney Golf Course starting next Tuesday.
DC-S teammates Matthew Lorens (96), Roemello Grier (105) and Justin Owens (112) — all seniors — completed that qualifying team total.
Senior Conor Lemon (122) will also compete with Class D’s best in the state tourney.
The Mullen Broncos have been a force whether it’s Class D football, basketball or wrestling during recent seasons.
However, the Broncos only qualified one state golfer in D-5 champion Koby Walker (78).
Morrill finished fifth overall (413), one spot behind Morrill. The Lions also qualified just one individual in senor Hunter Craig (ninth, 93).
The Paxton Tigers (365) took home a district team title while Garden County placed second overall (379).
Other D-5 teams recording scores were Crawford (416), Creek Valley (426) and Wallace (563).
Coach John Kershaw’s Hitchcock County Falcons will actually match Mullen and Morrill together.
The Falcons qualified two individuals on Monday as sophomore Darian Hutto finished fourth (86) and classmate Remington Hodges (91) captured seventh.
Hodges needed two less strokes to conquer the Legend Buttes course than those final four state qualifiers.
Hitchcock County’s duo will join DC-S, Medicine Valley and Arapahoe freshman Cord Frink in the Class D state tourney.
Class C districts are still taking place today with Cambridge and Southwest both competing for state spots.
More details will be featured in Wednesday’s Gazette to wrap up the district golf coverage.
