CAMBRIDGE, Neb. -- Southwest ran, jumped and vaulted its way to a second-place team finish at Thursday’s C-8 District Track Meet in Cambridge.

The Roughrider boys won four events -- the 100m, 200m, high jump and pole vault -- to score 92 points. That was only surpassed by South Loup, which won Thursday’s meet with 116 points.

In addition, the Roughriders qualified six athletes for next week’s Nebraska State Track and Field Championships in Omaha.

Burke bound boys from Southwest include Derek Greenlee, Logan Greenlee, Kaden Guerrero, Patrick Sughroue and Ryan Van Pelt. Nicole Dewey will be Southwest’s sixth, and lone girl, representative at state.

The Roughriders dominated the boys pole vault, where they took the top three places and had three state qualifiers.

Logan Greenlee won the event by clearing 14-0, while Guerrero and Sughroue tied for second with 13-04. That was also the automatic state qualifying mark, which meant both had punched their ticket to Omaha.

Meanwhile, jump specialist Derek Greenlee qualified in three events. He won the high jump with his 6 foot, 6 inch effort, and took second in both the long jump (20-07) and triple jump (41-06). His marks were only surpassed by Amherst’s Dakota Abbott, who has all-class top-10 marks in both events.

In the running events, sprinter Ryan Van Pelt excelled by winning both 100m and 200m races. He hit a personal best in the 100m with a time of 11.23 seconds and came close to his PR mark in the 200m with a time of 23.18.

Dundy County-Stratton was hot on Southwest’s heels, as the Tigers took third with 80 points.

Tiger superstar Phalen Sanford won four gold medals and set two PRs to highlight DCS’ day.

Sanford won the 400m (50.02), 110m hurdles (14.90), 300m hurdles (39.29) and ran anchor in the Tigers’ winning 4x400 relay. His 1600m relay teammates were Guillermo Diaz, Serbando Diaz-Cortez and Wyatt Lemon.

Sanford hit new marks in the 400m and 300m hurdles. His 300m hurdle time is currently the second-fastest in the entire state heading into next week’s state meet.

DCS also had qualifiers in two other events: Lemon in the 200m (23.21) and the 4x100 (45.85), which included Diaz, Diaz-Cortez, Lemon and Reice Haines.

Other Gazette area qualifiers from the C-8 Meet included Southern Valley’s Brant Grove and Ivan Varela and Cambridge’s Zack Sickels.

Grove won the discus with a toss of 135-00, Varela narrowly beat out Lemon for second in the 400m (51.16 to 51.78) and Sickels took silver in both the 800m (2:02.43) and 1600m (4:58.44).
