Lady Bison win final duals, home invite of season
McCOOK, Neb. -- With a weekend home, most tennis teams might suffer from apathy.
When it's the McCook Lady Bison, any such notion would be met with a famous line from The Sopranos.
"Forget about it."
In its final home contests of the season, the defending Class B state champions swept two panhandle opponents on Friday before dominating its home invite Saturday at the Bison Tennis Courts.
Friday's twin bill ended in two 4-0 victories for the Lady Bison, as McCook swept both Alliance and Scottsbluff.
In the Alliance victory, Kassidy Michaelis won her No. 1 Singles match 6-0, 6-0, while Haley Potthoff won No. 2 Singles 6-3, 6-1.
Both Lady Bison doubles teams also swept their Lady Bulldog counterparts. Cassiddy Beeby/Syd Thompson notched a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 1, while Riley Hansen/Syd Stewart won a close 6-2, 7-5 match.
Kori Uerling and Delaney Jumps also scored junior varsity wins against Alliance.
Against Scottsbluff, Michaelis won No. 1 Singles 6-1, 6-0 and Potthoff won No. 2 Singles 6-1, 6-1.
The same doubles teams of Beeby/Thompson (6-0, 6-0 score) and Hansen/Stewart (6-1, 6-1) recorded sweeps.
In JV action, McCook won all seven of its doubles matches.
Friday marked the final duals of the season for McCook. The Lady Bison finished a perfect 13-0 in duals. McCook head coach Matt Wiemers commented that one particular highlight was defeating Kearney High at Kearney for just the second time in 20 years.
The junior varsity also concluded its season with a perfect 13-0 duals record. The Bison reserves also won both invites -- Lexington and North Platte -- they competed in.
Saturday's McCook Invite was all about the Lady Bison. The hosts won the invite by racking up 52 points, while Ogallala was a distant second with 29.
All five of McCook's varsity entries went a perfect 4-0.
Michaelis defeated all four of her No. 1 Singles opponents by 8-0 scores, while Potthoff won No. 2 Singles with an 8-1 score and three 8-3 decisions.
In doubles action, Beeby/Thompson scored an 8-0 win over McCook's Hodgson/Wilcox, 8-1 wins over Scottsbluff and McCook's and an 8-3 win over Ogallala.
Hansen/Stewart had two nailbiters on their way to a 4-0 outing. They beat Ogallala 9-7 and McCook's Hill/Stevens 8-5, while winning more comfortable decisions against Scottsbluff 8-2 and 8-0.
No. 3 doubles went to McCook's Uerling/Jumps. The duo went 4-0 with an 8-0 win over Scottsbluff, an 8-1 win over Gering, an 8-2 win over McCook's Laurie/Kjendal and an 8-4 win over Ogallala.
McCook also had additional players fill in for teams short on players.
Brynn Golden and Olivia Koetter both got experience at No. 1 singles. They each finished 0-2.
Megan Hodgson and Elsa Wilcox went 2-2 at No. 1 Doubles. They had wins over Scottsbluff (8-6) and McCook's Hauxwell/Mooney (9-7) and losses to Ogallala (8-2) and McCook's Beeby/Thompson (8-0).
Kylee Hauxwell/Rylee Mooney also played No. 1 Doubles, going 0-4.
In No. 2 Doubles, Macy Hill/Jadie Stevens went 2-2 with two wins over Scottsbluff (9-8, 8-2) and losses to McCook's Hansen/Stewart (8-5) and Ogallala (8-0).
Emily Laurie/Emily Kjendal went 2-2 at No. 3 Doubles, scoring wins over Gering (8-1) and Scottsbluff (8-2).
McCook closes out the regular season with an invitational at Kearney Catholic on Thursday, followed by the Greater Nebraska Athletic Conference Tournament in North Platte on Saturday.
