MCC rallies in ninth inning to beat SCC

McCOOK, Neb. -- The McCook Community College Indian baseball team came back from a 5-0 deficit in the third inning and a 13-12 ninth inning deficit to beat Southeast Community College 14-13.
Tanner Zeggil (Stagner, Ontario) delivered the game-winning, two-out, bases-loaded, two-run single to cap the comeback.
The inning started with a walk from Jason Hill, (Surrey, British Columbia), a sacrifice bunt by Hunter Rynders (Centennial, Colo.) an intentional walk to Jake Sanford (who had two home runs in the game), and a two-out walk by Dalton Bartling, (Gretna High School) to set the stage for Zeggil, who singled on a 2-1 count in his first at bat of the game having come in as a defensive replacement in the eighth inning.
Shaun Hickey (Summersville, New Brunswick) started the game for the Indians giving up six runs on five hits in 2.1 innings and was relieved by Braydon Peif (Greeley, Colo.) who pitched 3.2 innings and gave up four runs on five hits.
Trailing 5-0 in the fourth inning, MCC came back to tie the game. Jacob Reid (Mississauga, Ontario) and Rynders singled in front of Sanford who homered to left. Michael Sookdeo (Brampton, Ontario) Bartling singled in front of Mathew Tremblay (Saint-Charles, Quebec) who drove home Sookdeo and Bartling scored on an outfield error to tie the game 5-5.
Southeast Community College took the lead back with three runs in the fourth but the Indians countered with five more in the bottom of the inning. Hill walked and Sanford singled for Soodeo who singled home Hill. Tremblay delivered a two-out single followed by a Johnny Giunta (Milton, Ontario.) home run to left field to give the Indians a 10-8 lead.
With two outs in the fifth inning, Rynders singled in front of Sanford who drove a line drive over the right-field fence to make it a 12-8 MCC lead.
The Storm struck for a pair of runs in the sixth inning and put three runs up in the eighth on an Aaron Palensky home run to left field to give the Storm a 13-12 lead. On the play Tremblay, MCC leftfielder, ran into the fence and had to leave the game – his replacement in the order was Zeggil.
Tyler Cox (Mississauga, Ontario) picked up the win pitching the final three innings allowing three hits, three runs and striking out five Storm hitters.
MCC had 16 hits in the game, 13 singles and three home runs led by Sanford’s four-for-five showing with 5 RBIs and 10 total bases. Sookdeo had three hits and an RBI, Tremblay a pair of hits with three RBIs and Rynders was the fourth Indian with a multi-hit game.
The Indians are 13-27 on the season (10-11 at home). With last weekend’s weather postponements MCC has two remaining home dates on the schedule: April 27 at 1 p.m. against Northeast Junior College and a May 2 doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. against Northeast Junior College.
This weekend MCC travels to Miles City, Mont., for doubleheaders Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
