MCC women salvage one of four at Lamar
LAMAR, Colo. – The McCook Community College Lady Indian softball team came away with one win in four games Friday and Saturday.
Lamar took the first game of the series 4-3 in nine innings Friday and the Indians came back to claim the second game 5-4. On Saturday Lamar won 11-0 and 10-7.
MCC is now 20-18 and travel to Scottsbluff Wednesday for a doubleheader against Western Nebraska. The Lady Indians have three home dates left on the schedule, starting Friday with a doubleheader against Lamar Community College starting at 11 a.m. then two games Sunday against Northeastern Junior College starting at 2 p.m. The home finale will be April 15 against Nebraska Western at 11 a.m.
Lamar improves to a league best 29-12 and 19-3 in the division. MCC is 7-13 in the division.
McCook CC 5, Lamar CC 4: After both teams tallied a pair of runs in the first, MCC put what would be the game-winner on the board with three runs in the third. Lamar came back with two runs in the fourth inning. Kayla Harrison (Richmond, B.C.) picked up the win (4-0) allowing two earned runs in 3.2 innings of work and Taya Thorpe came on Lamar CC 4, McCook CC 3 (9 innings): The Lady Indians came out in a tight game to start the series matching the Running Lopes inning-for-inning until the bottom of the ninth frame. MCC scored a run in the third and Lamar responded to tie the game. The Lady Indians put up two runs on the scoreboard in the fifth only to have Lamar tied it in the bottom of the inning. The game remained at 3-3 until the ninth.
MCC managed nine hits on the afternoon two each from Chanel Siebenthal (Lakewood, Colo.) and Isabel Serna (Roy, Utah), who had two RBIs. Siebenthal and Kaylee Wengren (Taylorsville, Utah) had the only extra-base hits, both doubles.
Taya Thorpe (Malad, Idaho) went the distance in the circle and fell to 14-16 on the season. She allowed seven hits and three earned runs in the series opener and struck out 13 Lamar hitters. She leads the region with 132 strikeouts.
